Two budget-friendly days that alternate hot water and late nights: Széchenyi's outdoor pools and the Rudas rooftop, the Parliament and Fisherman's Bastion, and the District VII ruin bars from Szimpla Kert to Instant-Fogas. Baths are best October to April, when the steam rises.

    Goulash at Frici PapaBudapest

A no-frills 'kifőzde' (canteen) that budget guides keep recommending for cheap Hungarian classics: goulash or chicken paprikash for about 2,700 HUF. Quick service, busy at lunch. A good place to refuel before an afternoon rest and the night ahead.

  5. 6 pm 4
    Dinner at KőlevesBudapest

Jewish-Hungarian cooking in the heart of the ruin-bar quarter, with a garden bar next door. Mains roughly 3,000–6,000 HUF; weekday lunch menus 1,500–2,000 HUF. Ruin-bar guides say arrive just after 6pm to get a table without booking.

  6. 8 pm 5
Szimpla Kert, the original ruin barBudapest

The 2002 squat-turned-bar that started the ruin-pub craze: rooms of mismatched furniture, a Trabant in the courtyard and graffiti on every wall. Open Mon–Fri 15:00–04:00, Sat 11:00–04:00, Sun 09:00–04:00. Go before 21:00 to see the rooms before the crowds. On Sundays a farmers' market runs here 09:00–14:00. Budget about 3,000 HUF for two drinks.

  7. 10:30 pm 6
    Late night at Instant-FogasBudapest

A warren of bars and dance floors across two buildings, open daily 18:00–06:00, with a different music style in each room, so stay as late as you like. Pricier than most ruin bars but cheaper than western Europe; drinks come in cups with a 300 HUF refundable deposit. Reports advise ignoring anyone selling on the street outside and keeping noise down on the way out.

  8. Day 29 am – 11:30 pm · 5 stops
  9. 9 am 7
    Fisherman's Bastion and Matthias ChurchBudapest

The white turrets look straight across the Danube at the Parliament. The lower terraces are free 24 hours; the upper towers are 1,700 HUF from 9:00 to 19:00 (2026) and free outside those hours, so a sunrise visit costs nothing. Matthias Church next door is 3,400 HUF. Mornings are quiet; by midday the square is packed.

The Turkish bath is men-only on some mornings and women-only all day Tuesday, so check the timetable. Csendes, the quieter ruin barBudapest

A ruin bar near Astoria hung with dolls, bicycles and odd furniture, with a calmer crowd than District VII. Open daily from 10:00 to midnight or 2am. Beer and wine are cheaper than the cocktails. Writers who lived in Budapest call it the one with the best vibe.
