  1. Day 18:30 am – 6 pm · 4 stops

Acropolis & Parthenon: enter at openingAthens

Go first thing: the Parthenon, the Erechtheion with its Caryatid porch, and the Propylaea before the tour groups build. Winter hours from 1 November are 8am-5pm (last entry 4:30pm); a full-price ticket is €30. Enter via the south slope gate near the Acropoli metro to dodge the main entrance queues.

  3. 11:30 am2
Acropolis Museum: the Parthenon story indoorsAthens

The museum at the foot of the rock holds the surviving Parthenon frieze and pediment sculpture in a top-lit gallery aligned to the temple itself. The second-floor restaurant has a direct Parthenon view if you want lunch with the sight you just walked.

    8 min walk · 600 m
  4. 2 pm3
Anafiotika & Plaka: island lanes under the rockAthens

The whitewashed Cycladic lanes of Anafiotika, built by island masons in the 19th century, feel like a Greek island dropped onto the Acropolis slope. Wander down into Plaka's neoclassical streets afterwards; keep voices low, it is a quiet residential pocket.

    13 min walk · 950 m
  5. 5 pm4
Philopappos Hill: sunset over the AcropolisAthens

The classic low-key sunset viewpoint: from the hill opposite the rock the floodlit Acropolis glows as the light drops, without the Lycabettus crowds. The Philopappos monument itself is a 2nd-century Roman tomb worth the short climb.

  6. Day 29 am – 5 pm · 4 stops
  7. 9 am5
Ancient Agora: the heart of democratic AthensAthens

Where Athenians voted, traded and philosophised: walk the Panathenaic Way past the reconstructed Stoa of Attalos to the Temple of Hephaestus, the best-preserved Greek temple anywhere and far less crowded than the Parthenon.

    15 min walk · 1.1 km
  8. 11:30 am6
Temple of Olympian Zeus & Hadrian's ArchAthens

Fifteen of the original 104 Corinthian columns still stand, each 17 metres tall — enough to grasp the scale of the largest temple in Greece, 700 years in the building. Hadrian's Arch frames the walk in from the Plaka side.

    9 min walk · 700 m
  9. 1 pm7
Panathenaic Stadium: run the marble trackAthens

The only stadium in the world built entirely of marble, rebuilt for the first modern Olympics in 1896 on the site of the ancient Panathenaic games. Visitors can run a lap of the track and climb to the top tier for the view back toward the Acropolis.

    12 min walk · 900 m
  10. 4 pm8
Syntagma Square: the Evzone guard changeAthens

Watch the Evzones in their pom-pommed tsarouchia change guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in front of Parliament; changes happen at the top of every hour, with the full ceremonial version on Sunday at 11am. The National Garden next door is the quiet walk back toward Plaka.

  11. Day 39 am – 6:30 pm · 4 stops
  12. 9 am9
National Archaeological Museum: gold masks & bronzesAthens

Greece's greatest collection: the gold Mask of Agamemnon from Mycenae, the Antikythera mechanism, and bronze statues pulled from the sea. Give it a full morning; the Mycenaean hall alone justifies the trip up Patission Street.

    21 min walk · 1.6 km
  13. 12 pm10
Mount Lycabettus: the whole city belowAthens

Athens' highest point at 277 metres: walk up the pine-shaded path from Kolonaki or take the funicular from Aristippou Street. From the chapel of St George the Acropolis, the port of Piraeus and, on a clear day, the Saronic Gulf are all in one panorama.

8 min by train or taxi · 2.3 km
  14. 2:30 pm11
Kerameikos: the ancient cemetery & city gateAthens

The potters' quarter that gave ceramics its name, and Athens' ancient cemetery: the Dipylon Gate, the Street of Tombs with its carved grave reliefs, and a small museum. One of the quietest major sites in the centre, and a favourite of repeat visitors.

  15. 5 pm12
Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounio: sunset finaleSounio

The coastal excursion every Athens itinerary earns: leave the city mid-afternoon for the ~1h15 drive down the Athens Riviera, and arrive in time for sunset over the Aegean from the 5th-century BC marble temple on the cliff edge. Byron carved his name on a column here; look for it.
