Arenal to Monteverde the only sane way, and a cloud forest after dark

- 7:45 am1Jeep-boat-jeep pickup in La FortunaLa Fortuna
Around 35 dollars, bookable at any hotel desk the day before, and it is not really jeeps — a minibus, a launch, a second minibus. Two departures each way, roughly 08:00 and mid-afternoon. Taking the morning one costs you Mistico's hanging bridges and Arenal 1968, so do those the day before; taking the afternoon one costs you the reserve. Luggage travels with you the whole way, which is the other reason this beats a shuttle round the lake.
3 min walk · 100 m - 8:15 am2Across Lake Arenal by launchLa Fortuna
The middle leg is a thirty-minute boat and the only part worth staying awake for — sit on the stern side, because the cone behind you is the last clear view of Arenal you will get. Monteverde is under cloud most afternoons by design. The road up from the far shore is gravel switchbacks; if you get carsick, take something in La Fortuna, not at the dock.
26 min by train or taxi · 26 km - 11:30 am3Casado and a coffee in Santa ElenaMonteverde
A soda — the small family comedores, not the tourist places on the main junction — does a casado of rice, beans, plantain and a protein for under ten dollars. Eat properly now: the reserve has a café at the gate and nothing else, and you are about to spend three hours walking wet trails.
8 min by train or taxi · 4.3 km - 1:30 pm4Monteverde reserve: a timed circuit on the Sendero Bosque NubosoMonteverde
The ticketing changed at the end of 2025 — there is no open day pass any more, you buy a timed ticket to one specific trail circuit and each circuit has a cap, so book online rather than turning up. Adult entry is around 25 dollars. Reserve hours are 07:00 to 16:00. Afternoons are quieter and wetter; if a resplendent quetzal is the reason you came, that is a 07:00 visit with a guide and a scope, not this slot. Bring a rain jacket regardless — 'cloud forest' is a weather forecast, not a name.
3 min walk · 0 m - 4:05 pm5Hummingbirds at the gallery by the gateMonteverde
Free, thirty feeders, and a dozen species including violet sabrewings hovering at arm's length. Ten minutes here gets better photographs than three hours on the trails, which is either delightful or annoying depending on your temperament.
8 min by train or taxi · 4.3 km - 5:15 pm6Early dinner before the night walkMonteverde
Eat before, not after — the walk finishes near nine and half of Santa Elena has shut by then. Keep this loose until you know which night tour you got.
3 min walk · 50 m - 7 pm7Guided night walkMonteverde
Around 35 dollars, reservation only, and the single best two hours in Monteverde — roughly seventy percent of the cloud forest's animals are nocturnal and the daytime trails are largely a walk through green. The guide carries the torch and you deliberately do not: your eyes stay adjusted, and that is why the group sees the sloth, the side-striped palm pit viper and the tarantula in its burrow rather than a bouncing circle of light. Closed shoes, long trousers, and expect drizzle.
