Bangkok to the Gulf overland: train 85, the 08:00 van, and lunch on Samui

   Train 85 pulls into Surat ThaniSurat Thani

   Boarded at Krung Thep Aphiwat at 19:50 the night before. A second-class air-con lower berth is about 1,000B and is worth the difference — the upper berth has no window and no room to sit up. The train runs late more often than not, which matters only if you did not buy the joint train+bus+ferry ticket: that van waits for the train, a separately booked one leaves without you.

   Roti, coffee in a plastic bag and khao tom for under 80B on the platform side. The men on the forecourt will sell you the ferry ticket you are already holding, for double — walk past them to whoever is holding the operator's board.

   Ninety minutes east, included in the joint ticket, and there is no stop on the way. Use the toilet at the pier before boarding rather than the one on the boat.

   Ferry across to Koh SamuiKo Samui

   Seatran takes about 90 minutes for roughly 300B; Lomprayah's catamaran covers the same water in 45 minutes for about double, and runs four times a day in high season, two or three in low. Sit on the top deck at the bow — the approach past the coconut hills is the best quarter hour of the whole journey.

   Agree the fare before you get in. 150–200B a head across to Bophut is fair; 500B is the number they will open with. It is a shared truck that fills and goes, not a taxi, so being second in is better than being first.
