- 6:30 am1First bus, Puerto Natales to Laguna AmargaPuerto Natales
Buses Gómez, Bus Sur and María José all run the 06:45; buy the round trip the day before at the terminal and TELL THEM you are returning from Laguna Amarga the same evening, because the return seat is assigned. Two hours, sit on the left for the first sight of the massif across Lago Sarmiento. The last return bus from Laguna Amarga is 20:15 and it does not wait.
39 min by train or taxi · 87 km - 8:45 am2Park pass check at the Laguna Amarga porteríaTorres del Paine
Buy the day pass on pasesparques.cl at least 24 hours before — the gate no longer sells them reliably and the whole bus is turned into a queue when someone tries. High-season foreign adult is the top rate; low season (April to October) is roughly half. They scan a QR and check the name against a passport, so screenshot the pass: there is no signal at the portería. A short CONAF briefing follows and it is compulsory.
- 9:15 am3Shuttle to the Welcome CenterTorres del Paine
Seven kilometres of gravel that you do not want to walk twice. CLP 4,500 each way, CASH IN PESOS, no card and no dollars — carry the exact fare for both directions before you leave Natales. It cannot be reserved for a time; it simply meets the buses. Coming back, the last one leaves the Welcome Center at 19:00 and that is the hard deadline for the whole day.
- 9:40 am4Guided climb up the Ascencio to Refugio ChilenoTorres del Paine
A certified guide out of Puerto Natales (Antares, Big Foot, Erratic Rock's people) for a shared group of six to eight — worth it here less for route-finding than for the turnaround call. The first 45 minutes up the Windy Pass earn the name: it funnels straight down the valley and gusts to 100 km/h are ordinary. Poles, and put anything loose inside the pack — hats go to Argentina.
25 min by train or taxi · 25 km - 12:15 pm5Refugio Chileno: last water, hot lunchTorres del Paine
Order the box lunch when you book the guide; the refugio also sells sandwiches, hot water and a very good soup to non-guests, but the kitchen is for its own half-board first. Fill both bottles from the stream here — it is the last reliable water before the moraine, and the drinking water above the refugio is snowmelt you should filter.
8 min by train or taxi · 3.2 km - 12:50 pm6The moraine boulder field to the Mirador Base TorresTorres del Paine
A hold, not a plan: the last 45 minutes are an exposed scramble up house-sized blocks with painted markers, and in a whiteout there is nothing at the top but grey. Guides turn groups back here regularly and it is the right call. If you are not on the moraine by 14:30, do not start it — the descent to the last 19:00 shuttle needs three full hours. Wind typically builds through the afternoon and drops again after 18:00, which is why the sunrise version of this hike exists.
- 3:10 pm7Descend to the Welcome Center for the last shuttleTorres del Paine
Knees, not lungs, on the way down — the moraine and the Chileno descent are where people get hurt. There is a bar at the Welcome Center if you land early; a Austral Calafate while the guanacos work the field in front of the hotel is the correct end to this.
- 7:20 pm8Bus back to Puerto NatalesPuerto Natales
Return half of the morning ticket. Two hours in the dark; eat in Natales after — Base Camp at Erratic Rock or La Mesita Grande's pizza both serve past 22:00 and are full of people who did the same hike.
