The day, as they ran it
  1. 8:26 am1
Hudson Line north to BeaconNew York

About 85 minutes and roughly $16 off-peak against $25 peak, so leave after 09:00 if you can stomach the later start. Sit on the left going north — the track runs on the riverbank almost the whole way and the right side is a wall of rock. Beacon station is an eight-minute walk from Dia, and the free Beacon Loop bus does the same trip Monday to Saturday. Verified 2026-09-06 (beaconny.gov, destinationdutchess.com): the Beacon Free Loop is free and runs Monday to Saturday, roughly 06:00–21:00, from the Metro-North station past Dia, Main Street and Mount Beacon — there is no Sunday service, so a Sunday version of this day walks. The off-peak and peak fares quoted here were not re-verified.

  2. 10:15 am2
    Dia:Beacon, first thingBeacon

Verified 2026-09-06 (diaart.org): Dia:Beacon is open Friday to Monday 10:00–17:00 and closed Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, with admission closing at 16:30 — and advance tickets are suggested, not required: same-day and walk-up tickets are sold at the door, which is the opposite of the “timed tickets only, nothing at the door, released the month before on the 15th” this note used to claim, so the stop is no longer marked booked. Buy online anyway to skip the line on a summer weekend. Morning still matters more here than at any other museum: the galleries in the old Nabisco box-printing plant are lit by daylight through sawtooth roofs, so a late-afternoon visit in winter is genuinely dim. Three hours is right; Serra’s torqued ellipses and the Walter De Maria floor take an hour of that between them. Dia is Friday to Monday and Storm King is closed Tuesdays, so this whole day only exists on a Friday, Saturday, Sunday or Monday. The $25 and $12 prices were not re-verified.

    Lunch on Main StreetBeacon

Beacon's Main Street is a mile long and everything on it is between the station and the mountain, so lunch is also the only walk through town you will get today. Counter service and fast, which matters — you have a ride to catch.

  4. 2:45 pm4
Rideshare across the river to Storm KingNew Windsor

There is no transit link, and this is the part people discover too late: about 25 minutes and $30–40 each way by car across the Newburgh–Beacon bridge. Order the return ride before you start walking back to the gate — coverage out there is thin and a Sunday evening pickup can take twenty minutes to appear.

Storm King Art Center — take the bikeNew Windsor

Five hundred acres. On foot you will see a third of it and mostly the third nearest the car park. Rent a bike at the visitor centre or ride the tram, and go to the far south fields first while you have legs — Maya Lin's Wavefield is the corner everyone runs out of time for. Verified 2026-09-06 (stormking.org/visit, /tickets): Wednesday to Monday 10:00–18:00, closed Tuesdays, final entry 17:00, with Saturdays open to 20:00 in summer, and the season reopens 1 April — there is no winter version of this day. Pre-purchased tickets are required to guarantee admission and parking, and each month goes on sale midway through the month before (October 2026 was released 15 September). Peak fall pricing applies to Saturdays and Sundays from 26 September to 8 November 2026, which is also when it is at its best. This stop used to run to 18:20, half an hour past closing; it now ends at 18:00.

Dinner at the Roundhouse over the fallsBeacon

A converted mill at the bottom of Main Street with the falls running under the terrace. Reserve — it is the one room in Beacon that fills, and you are arriving on the same schedule as everyone else coming back from Storm King.

    Last comfortable train southBeacon

Trains thin out after about 22:00 and the late ones stop everywhere. Check the actual timetable at dinner rather than trusting this — a missed Beacon train is an hour on a cold platform.
