- 3:30 am1Car from Yogyakarta to Borobudur in the darkYogyakarta
An hour and ten from Malioboro at that hour against nearly two in daylight, so this is the only sane way to do the sunrise. A driver for the whole day, Borobudur then Prambanan, is 550,000-700,000 IDR and must be arranged the night before; there is no ride-hailing coverage at 03:30. Go to the Manohara gate inside the park, not the main ticket office — that is a different entrance and it is closed.
27 min by train or taxi · 27 km - 4:30 am2Sunrise access on the Borobudur terracesMagelang
1,000,000 IDR, capped at roughly 100 people a morning, and it CANNOT be bought on the day — there is no walk-up window, reservations go through the authorised channel in advance and sell out weeks ahead in the dry season. Registration is 04:00-04:30 at Manohara, they issue a torch and the compulsory upacala sandals (structural conservation rule: your own shoes may not touch the stone), and you go up in guided groups of about twenty. Cover shoulders and knees. Afterwards the ticket includes breakfast. If the quota is gone, Punthuk Setumbu hill is 30,000 IDR for the temple floating in mist from two kilometres away, then enter normally at 06:30 — honestly a fine substitute at a thirtieth of the price.
6 min walk · 450 m - 7 am3Breakfast at Manohara, in the garden under the templeMagelang
Included in the sunrise ticket, so do not walk out and buy breakfast elsewhere. This is also where you hand back the sandals.
8 min by train or taxi · 2.0 km - 8:15 am4Candi Mendut and Candi Pawon on the way outMagelang
Three kilometres east, and on the same dead-straight axis as Borobudur — the three were built as one pilgrimage route. 10,000-20,000 IDR each. The three-metre seated Buddha inside Mendut is the finest single statue in central Java and there will be perhaps four other people there.
27 min by train or taxi · 27 km - 12 pm5Gudeg at Yu Djum on WijilanYogyakarta
Wijilan, just east of the kraton wall, is the gudeg street — young jackfruit stewed for hours in coconut milk and palm sugar, served with krecek, egg and chicken. Ask for gudeg kering, the drier version, which is the Yogya one. About 25,000-35,000 IDR a plate.
14 min by train or taxi · 14 km - 3:30 pm6Prambanan in the late lightSleman
400,000 IDR for foreign adults. The Borobudur + Prambanan combo at 575,000 saves 175,000 but does NOT apply if you bought the sunrise ticket, so buy this one on its own. Enter by the east gate and read the Ramayana reliefs clockwise from the Shiva temple's east stair, which is the order they were carved to be read in. From about 16:30 the stone goes orange and the day-trip buses have gone.
3 min walk · 0 m - 7:30 pm7Ramayana ballet at the Trimurti open-air stageSleman
The outdoor stage runs in the dry season, May to October, with the floodlit temples as the backdrop; in the wet season it moves indoors to the covered Trimurti theatre and loses most of the point. Book online a few days ahead and take the middle-price seats — the cheapest are far enough back that the temples and the dancers stop being one picture. Two hours, gamelan, no dialogue.
14 min by train or taxi · 14 km - 10:15 pm8Lesehan mats on Malioboro at the end of itYogyakarta
Mats and low tables appear along the east pavement after about 18:00 and run late — nasi kucing, grilled chicken, kopi joss with a lump of glowing charcoal dropped in it. Prices are fixed and posted at most stalls now; ask anyway if there is no sign.
