El Chaltén: Laguna de los Tres, and the hour that decides it

- 6:30 am1Portal Senda al Fitz Roy at the top of San MartínEl Chaltén
Since late 2024 the El Chaltén trails are behind three access portals and a paid day pass. Buy it the night before on ventaweb.apn.gob.ar — the town's signal is poor and the portal has none, so SCREENSHOT the QR. One pass covers every trail in the northern zone for the day, and the 3-day Flexipass is barely more than two singles. The trailhead is at the north end of Avenida San Martín by the old Puesto Amarillo, not at the visitor centre.
8 min by train or taxi · 4.1 km - 6:50 am2Climb to the Mirador Fitz RoyEl Chaltén
The steepest sustained part of the day is in the first hour, which nobody warns you about. First light hits Fitz Roy around 06:30 in January and the alpenglow lasts ten minutes — if the sky is clear when you wake, leave at 04:30 instead and take this mirador in the dark, it is only 90 minutes up and the tower goes red from here.
- 8:20 am3Laguna Capri and the lenga forest to PoincenotEl Chaltén
Almost flat, and the Capri turnoff costs ten minutes for the best water view of the massif — take it, because the summit is often clouded by eleven. Poincenot is a free camp with a stream and a long-drop; fill up here, it is the last water before the climb.
- 10 am4The Río Blanco headwall: 400 m in an hourEl Chaltén
This is the hold. Cross the Río Blanco at the puesto and go straight up scree and switchbacks — an hour of relentless climbing, fully exposed, and the rangers close it in high wind or snow, sometimes at nine in the morning on a day that started blue. Check the board at the portal and the forecast at windguru or meteo Chaltén before you leave town. If it is shut, the Laguna Torre trail (also from town, 20 km, no headwall) is the day's answer and is nearly as good.
- 11:20 am5Laguna de los Tres, then five minutes furtherEl Chaltén
Everyone stops at the lip of the lake. Walk five minutes RIGHT along the moraine to the drop over Laguna Sucia — a 300 m cliff, a milk-green lake, and the Glaciar Río Blanco falling into it, and there is usually nobody there. The wind over the moraine is ferocious even on a calm day; sit down to eat.
- 12:30 pm6Descend the same wayEl Chaltén
Poles for the headwall descent; it is loose. If a car or a transfer is an option, the alternative finish is to start at El Pilar (17 km north, a shared transfer leaves town around 08:00) and walk out through the Piedras Blancas glacier viewpoint to town — same distance, no repeated ground, and one more glacier.
- 5 pm7La Cervecería ChalténEl Chaltén
Locro and a home-brewed bock at a shared table, and the room is entirely people who came off the same trail. No reservations, so arriving at five rather than seven is the difference between a table and the pavement.
- 6:45 pm8Check tomorrow's wind on the ranger boardEl Chaltén
The rangers post the next day's wind and trail closures here every evening, and it is more reliable than any app. El Chaltén has almost no mobile coverage and patchy wifi — plan the next day from this board, not from your phone.
