- 7:40 am1Meet the driver in Selçuk and go straight to the Upper GateSelçuk
The entire reason to pay for a car today: you are dropped at the Upper (Magnesia) Gate and collected at the Lower Gate, so Ephesus is walked downhill, once, instead of down and back up. Every coach from Kuşadası and the cruise berth unloads at the Lower Gate from about half nine and walks up the marble against you. Agree the price for the whole day including the run to Pamukkale before you get in, and say in advance that you are not stopping at a leather factory or a carpet cooperative — otherwise you will, and it costs an hour.
8 min by train or taxi · 2.7 km - 8:15 am2Down Curetes Street to the Library of CelsusSelçuk
Gates open at eight and the first ninety minutes are the only ones with shade on Curetes Street and the only ones with the Library facade to yourself; by eleven it is a photograph of other people photographing it. Take the Odeon and the Fountain of Trajan on the way down rather than backtracking, and look at the paving — the ruts are cart tracks. There is no shade and no water for sale until the Lower Gate, and in July the site is genuinely dangerous by midday. Verified 2026-09-06: the site is open 08:00-19:00 April-October with last entry 30 minutes before close, so an 08:15 start really is at gate opening. From 3 June to 1 October it also runs night visits until 23:00 on Wednesday to Saturday, and entry after 19:00 is through the Lower Gate only — the Upper Gate this day depends on shuts at 19:00.
3 min walk · 200 m - 10:20 am3The Terrace Houses, which are a second ticketSelçuk
Sold separately at a booth inside the site, opposite the Library, and not included in site entry — which is why a lot of people walk past it thinking they have already paid. Do not. It is the roofed, climate-controlled excavation of six Roman apartment blocks, the mosaics and frescoes are the best-preserved thing at Ephesus, and it is the only place on the site where you are out of the sun. Forty-five minutes on the walkways is enough. Verified 2026-09-06: it is genuinely a second ticket, about €15, sold at the site and not covered by the Museum Pass Türkiye — and the Terrace Houses close at 18:30, half an hour before the rest of Ephesus.
12 min by train or taxi · 12 km - 11:30 am4Lunch on the terrace at ŞirinceŞirince
Eight kilometres of switchbacks above Selçuk, in the old schoolhouse, looking down the valley. Ignore the fruit wine every stall in the village presses on you — it is a souvenir, not a drink — and eat the Aegean meze and the local olive oil instead. The village is at its worst from noon when the coaches arrive, so this is the last comfortable half-hour; buy nothing on the way in.
1h 5m by train or taxi · 143 km - 12:30 pm5The long drive inland to DenizliDenizli
About three hours on the Aydın road and the motorway, and there is nothing on it worth stopping for — this is the tax you pay to do both sites in a day, and it is why so many people do this as an overnight instead. Sleep. Ask the driver to aim for the South Gate rather than Pamukkale town, and confirm he will collect you at the bottom in the village afterwards, because the two gates are eight kilometres apart by road.
18 min by train or taxi · 18 km - 3:45 pm6The travertines, entered at the South Gate and walked downPamukkale
Enter at the South Gate and walk down the white terraces into the village. The shuttle tours all use the North Gate and walk the flat top, so the terraces themselves are quieter from above than below. Shoes come off at the top and go in a bag — it is compulsory and enforced, and the calcite is sharp in places and slick in others, so go slowly and stay in the wet channel. Most of the pools are drained by afternoon and only the marked channel runs water; the pictures with waist-deep turquoise are either the top two pools or somewhere else entirely. Verified 2026-09-06: the South Gate is open 06:30-21:00 from April to October, so a mid-afternoon entry and a dusk exit are both comfortably inside the hours; the €30 ticket covers the travertines, the Hierapolis ruins and the archaeological museum on one entry. Cleopatra's Antique Pool is a separate €6-13 and keeps shorter hours, 08:00-20:00 with last entry 19:00.
7 min walk · 550 m - 5:40 pm7Hierapolis: the theatre and the necropolis, on the same ticketPamukkale
The Roman city on the plateau is included and most day-trippers never walk to it. The theatre is fifteen minutes uphill from the top of the terraces and empties completely after five. Cleopatra's Antique Pool is a further separate fee and is a warm, crowded swimming pool with columns in it — skip it unless somebody in the party has been promised a swim.
7 min walk · 550 m - 7 pm8Last light from the top of the white terracesPamukkale
Uncommitted because it depends on how the day has run. Closing is later in summer than the signs suggest but the guards sweep the terraces from the top down about half an hour before, so be already walking as the sun drops rather than turning to leave when it has. Barefoot in the dark on wet calcite is worse than it sounds; keep the phone torch out.
