- 8 am1Coffee under the arcades, and the Goldenes DachlInnsbruck
2657 gilded copper tiles on a balcony Maximilian I built to watch the square from, and it takes four minutes to look at. Café Munding, Austria's oldest confectioner, is around the corner and opens at 08:00. The whole old town is nine minutes' walk from the Congress funicular station, which is the point of this day.
8 min by train or taxi · 2.1 km - 8:40 am2Hungerburgbahn and the SeegrubenbahnInnsbruck
About €44 return Congress to Hafelekar; buy the through ticket rather than three separate stages. The Hungerburg funicular runs through Zaha Hadid's shell-shaped stations and takes eight minutes; then the big cable car to Seegrube. Summer season runs roughly late April to 1 November — outside that the top stage closes and the day does not exist.
8 min by train or taxi · 1.7 km - 9:25 am3Seegrube terrace, then the Hafelekarbahn to the topInnsbruck
The Hafelekar stage runs 09:00 to 17:00 and the last one down is the hard stop on the whole day — the Goetheweg is a five-hour round trip and there is no evening service. Have the coffee on the Seegrube terrace looking 1400 m straight down onto the Inn and the city grid.
9 min by train or taxi · 5.4 km - 10 am4Goetheweg: Hafelekar → Mühlkarscharte → PfeishütteInnsbruck
Starts at the Hafelekar top station and runs the ridge north into the Karwendel, about 2.5 hours each way with a few short climbs and descents rather than one long one. The city drops out of sight after the first saddle and the landscape changes completely. Snow lies on parts of it into June — check with the lift staff at the top before committing, they know today's conditions and the trail sign does not.
8 min by train or taxi · 1.9 km - 12:35 pm5Kaiserschmarrn at the PfeishütteInnsbruck
Open mid-June to mid-October, run by the Alpenverein, and they take overnight guests — a bed here turns this into a two-day Karwendel crossing out to Scharnitz. Kaiserschmarrn and a Radler, cash preferred. Watch the clock: leaving after 14:00 puts you at Hafelekar uncomfortably close to the last cable car.
8 min by train or taxi · 1.9 km - 1:40 pm6Back along the GoethewegInnsbruck
The return is the better direction for views — Innsbruck reappears below you through the Mühlkarscharte and the whole Stubai chain lines up beyond it. Afternoon light on the limestone is worth deliberately not hurrying, within the constraint of the 17:00 lift.
8 min by train or taxi · 1.6 km - 4:05 pm7Hafelekarspitze, ten minutes above the stationInnsbruck
A short steep scramble on a made path from the top station to a proper summit cross, and most people who ride up never do it. From here you see the Karwendel behind and the Alpine main ridge in front in a single turn.
8 min by train or taxi · 5.0 km - 7:30 pm8Dinner at Die WilderinInnsbruck
Game, foraged things and Tyrolean produce, in the old town, and it is small enough that a walk-in at 19:30 in summer will not work — book it in the morning before you go up. Ask for the courtyard.
