The day, as they ran it
  1. 7:30 am1
Vík to the glacier lagoon in the darkVík í Mýrdal

190 km, and in February you drive the first 90 minutes of it in the dark. Check road.is and vedur.is before you turn the key, every single morning — the two sand plains east of Vík are where Route 1 gets closed for wind, and gusts over 25 m/s will strip paint off a rental and void the insurance. If the wind board is orange, do not start; the tour will rebook you. Studded tyres are standard on winter rentals here and you want them.

  2. 9:40 am2
    Jökulsárlón at sunriseHöfn í Hornafirði

Mid-February sunrise is around 09:15 and the light stays low and pink for an hour — the single best window of the day, and you get it because the coach tours from Reykjavík cannot arrive before noon. Walk left from the car park along the shore away from the bridge; the icebergs stack up there and nobody follows. The boats (amphibian and zodiac) do not run in winter at all — they are a mid-May to October thing, so do not plan around them.

  3. 10:45 am3
Diamond Beach, opposite side of the bridgeHöfn í Hornafirði

Cross the bridge and park on the seaward side — the west lot is quieter than the east one. What is on the sand depends entirely on the tide and last night's calving: sometimes a field of clear boulders, sometimes almost nothing. Same sneaker-wave rule as Reynisfjara, and here the ice itself will knock you over. Do not climb on a berg.

  4. 11:45 am4
Crystal ice cave under Vatnajökull, by super-jeepHöfn í Hornafirði

Roughly 29,900 ISK with the established operators (Arctic Adventures, Glacier Adventure, Local Guide of Vatnajökull) — about $215. Book it weeks ahead; February is the peak of the season. Non-negotiables: the natural blue caves only exist roughly November to March, they are new every winter because the glacier moves, and a mild wet spell floods them and the tour is cancelled the same morning — take the refund, do not argue for a substitute. You get crampons, a helmet and a headlamp; you bring genuinely waterproof trousers, because you will be kneeling in meltwater. There is no self-guided version of this and people who try it die.

  5. 4:45 pm5
Vestrahorn from the Stokksnes gateHöfn í Hornafirði

900 ISK at the Viking Café, which owns the land and the gate — pay inside, the coffee is part of the deal. Held rather than planned because it is only worth the detour in two conditions: low wind so the tidal flats mirror the peak, and enough light left. In February you have until about 18:00. In a gale the black sand blasts sideways and you will not want the camera out.

  6. 6:15 pm6
Langoustine at Pakkhús, on the harbourHöfn í Hornafirði

Höfn is Iceland's langoustine town and Pakkhús is the reason to sleep here. Two floors of an old harbour warehouse; the langoustine tails in garlic butter and the langoustine soup are the order. They do not take reservations, so arrive at 18:00 or queue at 19:30. Around 8,900 ISK a head with a beer — this is what a good dinner costs in Iceland and no amount of shopping around changes it.

  7. 8:15 pm7
Hoffell hot tubs in the darkHöfn í Hornafirði

Five concrete tubs in a field 15 minutes inland from Höfn, about 1,500 ISK, honesty-box simple. No music, no ritual, no queue — the anti-Blue Lagoon. On a clear night you are sitting in 39°C water looking at the Vatnajökull icefield, and this is as good an aurora seat as any paid tour. Bring your own towel; the changing hut is a hut.

  8. 10 pm8
Bed in Höfn, aurora alarm setHöfn í Hornafirði

About 26,000 ISK for a double in February, which is the low-season price — the same room in July is half again. Ask reception for an aurora wake-up; most hotels on this coast will do it informally. Check en.vedur.is/weather/forecasts/aurora for the cloud-cover map, not just the KP number: KP 2 under a clear sky beats KP 5 under overcast every time.
