- 5 am1Ojek down to Labuan Bajo harbourLabuan Bajo
The town harbour on the main waterfront, not the Marina to the north — confirm which jetty with the operator by message the night before, because the two are a twenty-minute drive apart and boats do not wait. Ojek 20,000-30,000 IDR.
12 min walk · 950 m - 5:30 am2Private fast boat charter, cast off at 05:30Labuan Bajo
A shared speedboat is 50-90 USD a head, leaves at 06:00-06:30 and reaches Padar with fifteen other boats. A private charter for up to five people is roughly 3.5-4.5 million IDR for the day and its entire value is leaving at 05:30 and choosing your own order of stops. Split three or four ways it is barely more than the shared seat. Confirm in writing that fuel, crew, lunch and snorkel gear are included and that park fees are not.
- 6:45 am3Padar Island: the climb to the three baysLabuan Bajo
Park entry and ranger fees are collected per person per day at the jetty, in cash, and are higher at weekends and on public holidays — budget around 450,000-550,000 IDR and bring notes, not a card. Eight hundred-odd steps, now mostly boarded, with zero shade: take 1.5 litres each and do it before eight. The famous three-bay photograph is from the SECOND platform, not the summit; most people grind to the top and get a worse picture.
- 8:45 am4Manta Point at Karang Makassar, then the Taka Makassar sandbarLabuan Bajo
Gear is on the boat. The current here runs hard: drop in upstream of the cleaning station, drift, and let the tender pick you up — do not try to swim back. Mantas are most reliable December to February but present year-round. Stay above them and never touch. Taka Makassar, ten minutes on, is a crescent of sand that only exists at low tide.
- 11:15 am5Pink Beach and lunch cooked on boardLabuan Bajo
The pink is crushed red organ-pipe coral in the sand and it reads pink at the waterline in strong light, not in photographs taken at noon from a boat. Snorkelling straight off the beach is better than the beach itself. Crew grill fish and rice on board while you are in the water.
- 1:15 pm6Ranger trek at Loh Liang, Komodo IslandLabuan Bajo
The short trek is about 1.5 km and forty-five minutes; medium and long add heat, not dragons. A ranger with a forked stick goes with every group of five and the guide fee is separate from park entry, paid at the post. Dragons gather near the kitchen and the water tank at Loh Liang in the middle of the day, which is exactly why the short loop works. Do not go if you have an open cut; they track blood, and the rangers will ask.
- 5:45 pm7Flying foxes off Kalong Island at duskLabuan Bajo
Thousands of fruit bats lift out of the mangroves in one stream between about 18:10 and 18:30 in the dry season, later when it is overcast. Ask the skipper to cut the engine and drift; the boats that keep motoring get the bats but not the sound.
12 min walk · 950 m - 7:45 pm8Dinner back on the waterfrontLabuan Bajo
Wood-fired pizza on a terrace over the harbour, which after eleven hours of sun and salt is exactly the right thing. The night market grills two streets along are the cheaper version and the fish is straight off the boats.
