Lake Placid in January: Cascade in the morning, the Olympic oval after

- 7:30 am1Breakfast on Main Street before it is lightLake Placid
Eat properly: on a January hike you burn through food and there is nothing on Route 73. Fill a thermos here too — water bottles freeze solid above the treeline and a bladder hose freezes in twenty minutes.
16 min by train or taxi · 16 km - 8:20 am2Route 73 east to the Cascade trailheadKeene
Roadside parking on 73 at the trailhead has been squeezed hard. Verified 2026-09-06 (DEC notices via lakeplacid.com/notice-to-hikers and Adirondack Explorer): on peak periods DEC closes the Cascade trailhead parking on Route 73 outright — for 2026 that included 4–8 October — and hikers park at the Olympic Sports Complex at Mount Van Hoevenberg and ride a shuttle that runs on the half hour from 07:00, last ride up 15:00, last ride down 19:00, no dogs, and no other vehicle allowed into the trailhead. That is the Olympic Sports Complex, not the “Cascade Welcome Center” this note used to send you to. Whether the shuttle runs in January was NOT verified, so check which lot is open before you drive to either. Separately, and often confused with this: the Adirondack Mountain Reserve trailheads at St. Huberts need a free advance reservation from May 1 to October 31 through hikeamr.org. That is a different trailhead and does not apply here. The hikeamr.org reservation rule for the Adirondack Mountain Reserve at St. Huberts was not re-verified this pass.
1h 26m by train or taxi · 189 km - 8:50 am3Cascade Mountain, up and backKeene
Four point eight miles round trip and about 1,940 feet — the least demanding of the forty-six and the only one with a genuinely bare summit you can do in half a winter day. That does not make it casual in January: microspikes to the col, and the last quarter mile of open rock is wind-scoured ice where crampons and a real shell stop being optional. Hold, and mean it — if the summit forecast is above 25 mph wind, turn round at the treeline and you have still had a good morning. It gets dark at 16:40; be off the open rock by 14:30 whatever happens.
1h 30m by train or taxi · 199 km - 1:30 pm4Lunch at Big Slide Brewery on the way back inLake Placid
It is on Cascade Road on the way back into town, which nothing else good is — everywhere else means parking on Main Street in boots. Table by the window, boots off, no apologies.
8 min by train or taxi · 2.3 km - 2:30 pm5The toboggan chute onto Mirror LakeLake Placid
A wooden chute that fires you off a pier and out across the frozen lake. Verified 2026-09-06 (North Elba parks department, Lake Placid News): the 2026 season ran 17 January to 6 March, and the sessions are Friday 19:00–21:00, Saturday 12:00–16:00 and 19:00–21:00, and Sunday 12:00–15:00 — there is no weekday session and no late-afternoon one, so the 16:00–16:50 dusk run this day used to promise did not exist. It now takes the Saturday afternoon session; the Friday or Saturday evening session is the alternative if you want it in the dark, but that collides with dinner. It is $20 adult and $10 student for unlimited rides in a session, not a few dollars a run, and it only opens once the ice reaches twelve inches — some winters it never does, so this stays a hold.
4 min walk · 300 m - 3:45 pm6Public skate on the Olympic Speedskating OvalLake Placid
Eric Heiden won five gold medals on this outdoor ice in 1980 and you can skate the same 400 metres for about ten dollars including rentals. Check the session board first — hockey and speed-skating clubs take it often, and public sessions are shorter than you would guess. Outdoor ice, so it is weather-dependent in a thaw. Verified 2026-09-06 (lakeplacidolympiccenter.com): after a refrigeration rebuild the outdoor oval ran most days through 2 March 2026, but public sessions still share the ice with clubs, so the session board is the thing to check. The ten-dollar rental price was not re-verified.
3 min walk · 0 m - 5:15 pm7Lake Placid Olympic MuseumLake Placid
An hour, indoors, warm, and it explains why a village of 2,500 people has two Winter Games behind it. Take it if the chute was closed; skip it if you are still cold from the summit.
16 min walk · 1.2 km - 7 pm8Dinner at Generations, Mirror Lake InnLake Placid
Reserve, ask for a window on the lake side, and change out of hiking clothes — this is the one room in town that notices. It is the expensive line in a day that was otherwise free, which is the right way round after a peak.
