Four days through Ethiopia's art and culture: the 13th-century rock-hewn churches of Lalibela and their painted interiors, the older cave church of Yemrehanna Kristos, then Addis Ababa's museums (Lucy at the National Museum, the palace Ethnological Museum, Zoma's contemporary art), ending with azmari music at Fendika and the craft quarters of Merkato.

Bete Medhane Alem: the largest monolithic churchLalibela

The largest monolithic rock-hewn church in the world, carved from a single block of volcanic tuff in the 12th-13th century under King Lalibela. The forest of interior columns and the curtain wall enclosing the complex are the payoff. Dress modestly; shoes come off inside.

Bete Maryam, Bete Golgotha & the Selassie ChapelLalibela

Two of the oldest churches here, linked to Medhane Alem by trenches and dark tunnels. Maryam's interior holds some of the oldest surviving murals in Ethiopia. Golgotha is rarely open and bars entry to women; the adjacent Selassie Chapel is one of the least-visited corners of the complex.

  4. 3:30 pm3
    Bete Giyorgis: the cross-shaped iconLalibela

The icon of Lalibela: a perfect cross cut straight down into the rock, dedicated to St George, Ethiopia's patron saint. Come in the late afternoon for warm light and fewer tour groups; the walk down through the trench is half the experience.

Yemrehanna Kristos: the cave church that predates LalibelaLalibela

About 90 minutes by road from Lalibela, a church built inside a vast natural cave roughly 80 years before Lalibela's rock churches. The wooden-and-granite nave holds old painted ceilings, and the priests will show the manuscripts and ancient crosses. Bring a torch; the cave is dark.

Group 2 churches: Bete Amanuel & Bete Abba LibanosLalibela

The second cluster, southeast of the Jordan stream. Bete Amanuel was once Lalibela's own royal chapel, with Axumite-style layered wood-and-stone walls; Bete Abba Libanos is sheltered under the living rock roof. The symbolism needs a guide, so hire one at the gate.

  8. 3:30 pm6
    Bete Gabriel-Rufael & the priest's tunnelLalibela

A twin church entered through a pitch-dark tunnel and opened by a guardian priest. Tradition calls it the royal gateway. Pair it with the small rock-cut Bete Lehem chapel behind it, then cross back over the Jordan stream for sunset views over the town.

  10. 9 am7
National Museum of Ethiopia: Lucy and 3.2 million yearsAddis Ababa

Home of Lucy, the 3.2-million-year-old Australopithecus skeleton, plus a strong floor of pre-Axumite and Axumite art and artifacts. Go on a weekday morning when it is quietest; one to two hours is enough.

    13 min walk · 950 m
  11. 11:30 am8
Ethnological Museum at Addis Ababa UniversityAddis Ababa

Inside Haile Selassie's former palace on the university campus. The collection covers the country's ethnic groups: instruments, icons, crosses, textiles, and the emperor's own bedroom left intact. The building itself is the exhibit.

  12. 3 pm9
Zoma Museum: contemporary art in an eco-museumAddis Ababa

Founded by artist Elias Sime and curator Meskerem Assegued, this eco-built museum of mud, straw, and stone shows contemporary Ethiopian art across exhibition spaces, gardens, and a library. The country's top-rated art museum; leave time for the garden.

10 min by train or taxi · 6.2 km
  13. 8:30 pm10
Fendika Azmari Bet: traditional music nightAddis Ababa

Melaku Belay's azmari house in Kazanchis: traditional one-stringed masenqo music, Ethio-jazz nights, and dancing that pulls the whole room in. Music starts around 9:30pm on open evenings (typically Monday, Wednesday, Friday); entry is a nominal cover and tej comes in a berele flask.

  14. Day 49 am – 6 pm · 4 stops
  15. 9 am11
Entoto Maryam Church & Menelik II palace museumAddis Ababa

Up on Entoto Hill, Menelik II's 19th-century church and palace museum, where Addis Ababa began before the capital moved downhill. The small museum holds imperial regalia, manuscripts, and icons. Bring a jacket; it is noticeably colder at the top.

11 min by train or taxi · 6.6 km
  16. 12:30 pm12
Holy Trinity Cathedral: stained glass & imperial tombsAddis Ababa

The city's grandest cathedral: stained glass, murals, and the tombs of Haile Selassie and his wife. The on-site museum holds church treasures, crowns, and manuscripts. Hire a guide at the gate for the Orthodox history.

8 min by train or taxi · 3.1 km
  17. 2:30 pm13
    Merkato: artisan quarters walkAddis Ababa

Africa's largest open-air market, a sensory-overload maze. For the art lens, head to the artisan quarters: silver and gold workers, traditional weavers, icon and cross sellers, basket stalls. Keep valuables close; it is genuinely chaotic.

  18. 5 pm14
    Addis Fine Art galleryAddis Ababa

The country's leading contemporary gallery and its first white-cube space, founded in 2016 and now with a London outpost. It shows Alle School graduates and mid-career Ethiopian artists; the rotating exhibitions are the pulse of Addis's art scene. Check what is on before you go.
