The day, as they ran it
  1. 5:45 am1
Reine and Hamnøy while the E10 is emptyReine

Between roughly 25 May and 17 July the sun never sets here, so 05:45 is full daylight and the difference from 10:00 is only that the road is yours. The postcard view of the red rorbuer under Festvågtind is from the pavement on the Hamnøy bridge, not from Reine itself. Park in a marked bay: the E10 shoulders are ticketed at around 900 NOK and the locals report offenders, fairly.

  2. 6:45 am2
Drive to the Innersand trailhead at FredvangFredvang

About 25 minutes from Reine over the two Fredvang bridges. The farmer's field at Innersand is the closest lot — 100 NOK, Vipps or an honesty box, and worth paying, since the free lot at Fredvang skole adds 3 km each way. It fills by 09:00 in July. Do not park on the verge; this is someone's farm.

  3. 7:20 am3
Ryten summit and down to Kvalvika beachFredvang

About 9 km round trip with 500 m of ascent, 4 hours at a normal pace with photo stops. The first half is a boardwalked bog that is still a bog after rain — proper waterproof boots, not trainers. From the summit you look straight down onto Kvalvika; the famous overhanging rock is a few minutes below the top on the seaward side and there is no fence, no barrier and a very long drop, so do not do the sitting-on-the-edge photo in wind. Add an hour if you drop down to the beach itself. Go early: by 11:00 in July this trail is a queue, and the Lofoten weather changes inside 30 minutes — carry a shell even under a blue sky.

  4. 11:45 am4
Fish burger at Anita's Sjømat, SakrisøyReine

The yellow building on the little island between Reine and Hamnøy. Order the fish burger and a slice of the juniper-smoked salmon; they also sell stockfish, roe and their own aioli to take away. Counter service, eat outside on the wharf, roughly 300 NOK for lunch, which in Norway counts as cheap. Closed outside the season, so check in shoulder months.

  5. 12:45 pm5
East along the E10 to SvolværSvolvær

About 130 km and genuinely two hours, not the 95 minutes the map claims: single-lane tunnels, campervans that will not use the pull-outs, and sheep. Stop at Flakstad church or Haukland beach if you are ahead. Fuel is expensive and stations thin out west of Leknes — fill in Leknes.

  6. 3:15 pm6
Private RIB into Trollfjorden from SvinøyaSvolvær

The headline number is 16,200 NOK — and that is the boat for two hours, not the price per head. Six of us split it to about $250 each, which is why this is worth doing privately: you set the departure, you stop where the sea eagles are, and you go into the fjord when the Hurtigruten is not filling it. Trollfjorden is 2 km long and about 100 m wide at the mouth with 1,000 m walls, and the RIB turning inside it is the whole point. Full flotation suits, gloves and goggles are provided and you need them at 50 km/h; anything not zipped in will leave. Cancels for swell, and they will call you.

  7. 6:30 pm7
    Dinner at Børsen SpiseriSvolvær

An 1828 fish warehouse on the wharf, sloping plank floors and cod hanging from the rafters. Stockfish, cured whale, and Arctic char done properly; around 1,050 NOK a head for three courses without wine, and wine in Norway doubles a bill fast. Book — it is small and it is the best table in Svolvær.

  8. 9 pm8
Rorbu on stilts, and the sun refusing to setSvolvær

A converted fisherman's cabin over the water, about 3,400 NOK in high season — Lofoten lodging in July is the single biggest line in the budget and booking in January is not early. Bring an eye mask: with the midnight sun there are no curtains thick enough, and the low orange light at 23:00 on the harbour is better than anything you saw at noon.
