Oysters and a glass of white at nine, in the HallesLyon

CORRECTED 2026-09-06: the hall is not closed on Mondays. It runs Monday to Saturday from 07:00 — traders until 19:00, the restaurants until 22:30 — and Sunday 07:00–13:00 with the restaurants to 16:30, so the Sunday early close in the original is right but the Monday closure is not. What is true is that Monday is the traders' rest day and a good share of the stalls, some seafood counters among them, do not open, which makes a Monday morning here a thin version of this stop. Otherwise: this is a market you eat in rather than shop at — a dozen at one of the seafood counters with a glass of Mâcon at nine in the morning is an ordinary Lyonnais thing to do and nobody will look at you. Take a Saint-Marcellin from Mère Richard away with you for later.

The long traboule, 54 rue Saint-JeanLyon

Traboules are covered passages cut through private buildings, and the city pays the residents to leave certain doors unlocked in daylight. The long one runs from 54 rue Saint-Jean through four courtyards to 27 rue du Bœuf. Push the door, close it behind you, and keep your voice down — people live up those stairs, and the access is a courtesy that gets withdrawn street by street when it is abused.

    The Ficelle up to FourvièreLyon

The funicular leaves from inside the Vieux Lyon metro station and an ordinary TCL ticket covers it. Walking up is twenty-five minutes of steps and nobody local does it twice.

Fourvière, and down through the Roman theatresLyon

The basilica is free and gaudy in the best possible way; the terrace beside it is where you finally see how the Rhône and the Saône fit around the Presqu'île. Leave on foot through the Roman theatres rather than taking the funicular back down — they are open, free, and the path through them lands you back at the top of rue Saint-Jean.

Lunch in a bouchon that has the certificateLyon

Look for the 'Les Bouchons Lyonnais' certificate in the window — it is the only quick way to tell the twenty real ones from the sixty imitations on rue Saint-Jean. Book: there are about twelve tables. Quenelle de brochet, or the pâté en croûte that won the world championship. Most bouchons close Sunday and Monday, which shapes the whole week here.

Up the slopes of the Croix-RousseLyon

The other traboule quarter, and the working one. The silk weavers' six-storey open staircase at 9 place Colbert was built so a canut could carry finished cloth downhill under cover and dry. Climb the Montée Saint-Sébastien, look up at the Mur des Canuts trompe-l'œil at the top of the hill, and come back down through the Passage Thiaffait.

A praluline and a glass before darkLyon

The pink-praline brioche is a Lyon institution and Pralus invented it — buy a whole one, not a slice, because a slice goes stale by the time you want the rest. Then a glass on rue Mercière while the Presqu'île fills up for the evening.

The Fête des Lumières, walked against the flowLyon

Four nights around 8 December, free, and something like a million people walk the same loop in the same direction. Start at Terreaux and go against the current towards Bellecour — or better, do the Croix-Rousse installations first, which have no queue at all. Every restaurant on the Presqu'île is booked solid those nights: eat before seven or after eleven, and do not plan to change your mind in the middle. Verified 2026-09-06: the 2026 edition runs Saturday 5 to Tuesday 8 December, with the installations lit 18:00–24:00 on the 5th, 6th and 7th and 18:00–23:00 on the 8th. Free, no ticket and no booking, as written — the 19:30–22:30 window here is inside the lighting hours on all four nights.
