Melbourne laneways: a coffee crawl with an art gallery attached

- 7:40 am1Stand up and drink it at PatriciaMelbourne
There are no seats. That is the whole design — you stand at the shelf, drink it, and leave, which is why the queue moves even when it is out the door at 08:15. Weekdays only: Patricia is shut Saturday and Sunday, and a laneway coffee day planned for a weekend has to start at Market Lane instead. The magic in a glass is what to order; the white chocolate mendiant comes with it.
10 min walk · 750 m - 8:25 am2Second breakfast in the Queen Vic deli hallMelbourne
Check the day before you plan around this: the market is closed Mondays and Wednesdays, which catches out more visitors than any other rule in this city. Go to the Deli Hall (the enclosed one), get a borek from the Turkish counter and a bratwurst if it is cold, then a filter at Market Lane's Therry Street shop on the way out. Fruit and veg sheds discount hard in the last hour, not the first. Verified 2026-09-06: Queen Victoria Market is closed all day Monday and Wednesday (the Wednesday night market, 17:00-22:00, runs only in season), and trades Tue/Thu/Fri 06:00-15:00, Sat 06:00-16:00, Sun 09:00-16:00. This 08:25 stop therefore only works Tuesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday - on a Sunday the market is still shut at 08:25, and on Monday or Wednesday the day needs a different second breakfast.
8 min by train or taxi · 2.7 km - 9:35 am3Hosier Lane, Centre Place, Degraves, PresgraveMelbourne
Hosier Lane before 10:30 or not at all — the walking tours land on the half hour and the lane is 3 m wide. The walls are repainted constantly, so nothing you saw in a photo is still there; that is the point rather than a disappointment. Then cut through Centre Place and Degraves for the cafe-table version, and find Presgrave Place off Howey Place, which is the one nobody photographs: a lane hung with framed miniatures and tiny installations. Cathedral Arcade in the Nicholas Building has the leadlight dome worth a lift ride.
12 min walk · 900 m - 10:40 am4NGV International and the Great Hall ceilingMelbourne
The permanent collection is free, always — you only pay for the summer blockbuster, and those sell timed slots that go weeks ahead. Walk through the water wall, go straight to the Great Hall and lie down on the carpet: the Leonard French stained-glass ceiling is meant to be seen flat on your back and the guards will not mind. Ninety minutes is enough for one wing; trying to do the whole building is how this day dies. Verified 2026-09-06: NGV International is open daily 10:00-17:00 and entry to the permanent collection is free, so a 10:40 arrival is fine and the building closes well before this day needs it to.
10 min walk · 800 m - 12:30 pm5Lunch at the bar at SupernormalMelbourne
Lunch is the way into the Flinders Lane restaurants you cannot book for dinner. Supernormal keeps bar seats for walk-ins and turns them fast; the lobster roll is the thing people queue for and it is worth it once. Chin Chin two doors down runs the same walk-in-and-wait system and sends you to the basement bar while you wait, which is a decent place to be waiting.
8 min by train or taxi · 2.1 km - 2:05 pm6Tram 86 to Collingwood for Proud MaryMelbourne
The Free Tram Zone stops at the edge of the CBD — the moment you cross into Collingwood you need a Myki, and the daily cap is a few dollars, so buy the card and stop thinking about it. Proud Mary roasts its own and is the reason half of Melbourne's other cafes taste the way they do. Weekend brunch there is a 45-minute wait; a Tuesday at two, you walk in. Walk back down Smith Street rather than taking the tram — it is 20 minutes of the best browsing in the city.
8 min by train or taxi · 2.2 km - 5:15 pm7A negroni standing up at Bar AmericanoMelbourne
A tiled room the size of a bathroom that fits about ten people standing, hidden in the lane you found this morning. Cash used to be the rule and the no-photos house style still is. The drinks are expensive and correct. If it is full — it is often full by six — Siglo's terrace above the Supper Club has the Parliament view and a fireplace.
9 min walk · 650 m - 7 pm8Dinner at Cumulus IncMelbourne
Book the table, but know that the long marble bar is walk-in only and is the better seat — you watch the pass and you never wait for service. Order the tuna tartare, the madeleines, and something from the rotisserie to share. It runs from breakfast to late, so a 21:00 table is a real option if the earlier sittings are gone.
