Milford Sound the right way: from Te Anau, on the first boat

- 6:30 am1Breakfast in Te Anau and the last fuel there isTe Anau
Fill the tank in Te Anau. There is no fuel anywhere on the Milford Road — 119 km in, 119 km back, and the only pump at the far end is for boats. Before you turn the key, check the road status: the Milford Road is closed by avalanche risk and slips more often than any other state highway in the country, sometimes for a day, and between June and November you are legally required to carry snow chains in the vehicle even when the sun is out. Rental companies hand them over on request. Buy lunch supplies here too, and sandfly repellent, which is not a joke in Fiordland. Verified 2026-09-06: NZTA and DOC put the legal chain-carrying requirement between Te Anau and Milford at June to November inclusive, not May - the old May date here was wrong - and not carrying them is a fine of up to $750 with roadside checks that turn vehicles back. The avalanche control programme runs the winter season and the road is genuinely closed on average about eight days a year; check the status on the NZTA journey planner or 0800 44 44 49 before you turn the key.
16 min walk · 1.2 km - 7:05 am2SH94 north: Eglinton flats, Mirror Lakes, Monkey CreekTe Anau
Two hours without stopping, and you will stop, so give it two and a quarter. In order: the Eglinton flats where the beech forest opens out, Mirror Lakes (a five-minute boardwalk, only mirrors on a still morning, which is another argument for going early rather than at midday), Knobs Flat toilets, Pop's View, and Monkey Creek where you can drink straight from the stream and the kea will strip the rubber off your windscreen wipers while you do. Do not feed them. The road is single lane in places with no barrier, and the coaches from Queenstown come the other way from about 09:30 — being ahead of them is the entire trick of this day. Verified 2026-09-06: the stretch between the Hollyford Road junction and The Chasm is a signposted Restricted No Stopping Zone because it is avalanche path - the roadside stops on this list are all south of it, so keep driving through that section rather than pulling over for a photo.
38 min by train or taxi · 84 km - 9:10 am3Homer Tunnel and the walk into The ChasmMilford Sound
The Homer Tunnel is one lane, unlit, rough-hewn, and runs on traffic lights from October to April with waits up to 15 or 20 minutes — build that in. It drops 10 percent through the mountain and pops you into the Cleddau Valley. The Chasm is a 20-minute return loop over two bridges above water that has drilled the rock into holes; it is the best short walk on the road and nearly everyone on a coach misses it because the coach does not stop. Verified 2026-09-06: the Homer Tunnel traffic lights run over the summer peak with delays of up to about 20 minutes, so keep that in this window.
7 min walk · 550 m - 10:20 am4Park and check in at the terminalMilford Sound
Parking at the terminal is paid and enforced, the machine wants a card, and there is no phone signal to fix it if the machine dislikes you, so keep a card that works. It is a ten-minute walk from the car park to the wharf along the foreshore. Check in 20 minutes before departure — boats leave on time and there is no second one for an hour. Verified 2026-09-06: the terminal car park is NZ$10 an hour after the first 20 minutes free (NZ$5 an hour if you arrive after 15:00), the machine wants a card and there is no signal to argue with it; free parking exists at Deepwater Basin Road about 1.5 km back. In high season the main car park is full by about 09:00, which is another reason to be early even for a later sailing.
6 min walk · 450 m - 11:10 am5The 11:10 sailing on a small boatMilford Sound
CORRECTED 2026-09-06: there is no 10:45 Mitre Peak Cruises sailing and this day could not be walked as written. Mitre Peak's published departures are 08:50, 09:55, 11:10, 13:30 and 15:55, subject to season, so the 11:10 is the one this drive actually makes - leaving Te Anau at 07:05 does not get you to the terminal in time to check in for the 09:55. Everything about the boat itself checks out: Mitre Peak runs two-hour cruises on purpose-built vessels capped at 75 passengers, gets closer to the walls than the 400-seat ships, and is still operating in 2026; RealNZ and Southern Discoveries run the big boats and the underwater observatory add-on. Hold rather than book if you can, because this is weather-dependent in a specific way: rain is good here - a wet day puts hundreds of temporary waterfalls down the walls - and what ruins it is a storm that cancels sailings outright. The 11:10 is inside the coach crush; the 08:50 or the 15:55 are markedly emptier if you can shift the shape of the day. Sit outside on the bow going out, inside coming back, and expect the boat to nose right under Stirling Falls.
- 1:25 pm6Lunch at Pio Pio, up the road from the terminalMilford Sound
The terminal cafe is a sandwich in a fridge; Pio Pio at the lodge, a few minutes back down the road, is a proper kitchen with a deck over the river and is the only real food in Milford. It closes in the deep off-season, so check. If you brought lunch from Te Anau instead, eat it at Deepwater Basin rather than the car park — same water, no buses.
- 2:35 pm7Back down the valley in the afternoon lightTe Anau
Southbound in the afternoon is the good direction — the sun is on the Darran Mountains behind you and the coaches have all gone. Two worthwhile stops if the legs allow: the Lake Marian falls boardwalk off the Hollyford Road (20 minutes return; the full lake is four hours and not today), and Mirror Lakes again, which is a different place with the light from the other side. Watch for keas on the road at the tunnel and for one-lane bridges the whole way.
19 min walk · 1.4 km - 6:30 pm8Dinner at Redcliff, and book it this morningTe Anau
An old settler's cottage that cooks blue cod and Fiordland venison properly and has live music in the back bar most nights in summer — it is the best table in Te Anau by a distance and it has maybe fifteen of them. Ring before you drive out in the morning, because there is no signal in the valley to ring from later. Closed in winter some years, so check the season.
