The day, as they ran it
  1. 7:15 am1
Rastoke at first light, on the way downSlunj

Thirty kilometres north of the park on the Zagreb road, where the Slunjčica drops into the Korana through a village built on the waterfalls. The ticketed mill complex does not open until nine, but the public lanes and the bridge are free and open, and at this hour there is nobody. Twenty minutes, and it costs you nothing except the alarm clock.

Park at Entrance 2 before the lot fillsPlitvička Jezera

Parking is charged by the hour and the Entrance 2 lot is the smaller of the two — it is full by ten in season and the overflow is a walk along the main road with no pavement. Pay on exit at the machine, keep the ticket, and note that the coaches use the far lot, so if it is filling with buses you are already later than you wanted to be.

The Upper Lakes on foot, walked the unpopular wayPlitvička Jezera

Book the timed slot online days ahead and do not plan on turning up: the park sells a fixed number of tickets per entry hour to cap how many people are inside at once, the early slots go first, and by mid-morning in July there is no walk-up allocation left at either gate. Your ticket admits you in that hour and at that entrance only. The reason to start at Entrance 2 and take the Upper Lakes first is simple: the coaches from Zagreb and Zadar all unload at Entrance 1 around ten and walk the other way, so you spend the whole morning meeting them rather than queueing behind them. Swimming is banned everywhere in the park, including the pools that look designed for it, and so are drones. Verified 2026-09-06: Entrance 1 and Entrance 2 are open 07:00-20:00 in September with ticket sales until 18:00, and the entry really is timed — the ticket carries a one-hour arrival window at the entrance you chose, and turning up after it can cost you the day. September is priced in two bands, the full adult fare for entry before 15:00 and a reduced fare after it (about €40 against €25), so this 08:30 slot is the dearer one and the cost here has been raised from the late-entry price to the morning price. Peak-season slots do sell out days ahead, so 'book ahead' is a requirement, not caution.

Lunch at the Kozjak landing, because there is nothing elsePlitvička Jezera

Food inside the park is two kiosks and a self-service canteen, it is fine and it is the only option, because you are not meant to leave and re-enter on one ticket. Bring your own if you care; there are benches and the park would rather you did that than fed the bears' cousins. The good restaurant is outside Entrance 1 and belongs at the end of the day, not the middle.

The electric boat across Lake KozjakPlitvička Jezera

Included in the ticket, silent, and the single worst bottleneck in the park — in August the queue at the landing runs forty minutes and there is no way round the lake on foot in less than an hour. Everything about starting early is really about crossing this water before the crowd does. There is a second, smaller boat line at the north end; the boards at the landing tell you which is running. Verified 2026-09-06: the electric boat and the panoramic shuttle train are both included in the entrance ticket, as this says.

The Lower Lakes canyon, one-way as postedPlitvička Jezera

The Lower Lakes boardwalks are one-way and staff enforce the direction in season, so build the route to finish at the big waterfall rather than assuming you can nip back for it. Long stretches have no handrail and the planks are slippery for hours after rain — this is not the place for the sandals. Stay on the wood: the tufa barriers that make the whole landscape are living and a footprint in them lasts years.

Veliki Slap with the morning's crowd gonePlitvička Jezera

Seventy-eight metres, the tallest waterfall in Croatia, and the thing every day-tripper photographs at eleven — which is exactly why it is worth arriving at four. Getting out from here is either the staircase cut up the canyon wall, about twenty minutes, or the shuttle from the ST1 stop; the staircase is usually faster than the shuttle queue. If your car is at Entrance 2, check the last panoramic shuttle before you sit down anywhere, because it stops earlier than the park closes.

Lamb and sarma at Lička KućaPlitvička Jezera

Directly across the road from Entrance 1, an open hearth in the middle of the room and Lika mountain cooking rather than lake-view pricing. The lamb under the peka has to be ordered hours ahead — phone from the boardwalk if you want it — but the sarma, the trout and the sheep's cheese do not. It fills with tour groups at seven, so a five o'clock table is a different restaurant from a seven o'clock one.
