Down the steps beside the Fontana dell'Amenano, under the piazza. Swordfish heads on wet marble, prices shouted in Catanese, and Verified 2026-09-06 it runs Monday to Saturday from about 07:00 until 14:00, loudest between 09:00 and 11:00, with the stalls breaking down from 13:30 — and it does not happen at all on Sunday, or on 5 February when the city shuts for Sant'Agata. Buy nothing: this is a place to stand still in and get splashed.
14 min walk · 1.0 km - 7:45 am2Granita di mandorla and a brioche col tuppo at SaviaCatania
Opposite the gates of the Villa Bellini, doing this since 1897. Almond, not lemon, and you dip the brioche into it — in a Sicilian summer this is breakfast, not pudding. Pay at the till first and take the receipt to the counter, which is the order everywhere in Sicily and catches everyone out once.
22 min by train or taxi · 22 km - 8:45 am3Up the SP92 to Rifugio SapienzaNicolosi
An hour and a quarter through Nicolosi and up past the 2001 flows, which cross the road as fields of black rubble with a bar buried in them. Parking at Sapienza (1,900 m) is free and full by 10:00. It runs about 15°C colder up here than in Catania and there is no shade anywhere above the treeline: boots, a windproof, sunglasses. Verified 2026-09-06: the cable car at Sapienza starts running at 08:30, so a 10:00 arrival is inside its day.
3 min walk · 50 m - 10:15 am4Etna Sud: cable car, 4x4 and a guide, as high as the current ordinance allowsNicolosi
CORRECTED 2026-09-06, and read this before you book: the summit craters are not currently a plan. Access above roughly 2,800 m has required a guide from the Collegio Regionale delle Guide Alpine e Vulcanologiche since 2013, and after the Christmas Eve 2025 eruption and the activity that followed, an ordinance has capped access at about 2,850 m on both flanks — which for now removes the summit craters themselves, guide or no guide. The cap is reassessed against the INGV Osservatorio Etneo bulletins and can move either way at short notice, so treat the top of this stop as a maybe and confirm the ordinance with the guides the day before. What reliably works is the combined cable-car-plus-4x4-plus-guide ticket, around €98, which takes you up the Valle del Bove side toward the Torre del Filosofo as far as the day's limit. Verified 2026-09-06: the Funivia dell'Etna runs from 08:30, closing 17:45 in high season with the last descent at 17:30 and 16:00 in low season with the last descent at 15:50; during maintenance windows (in 2026, roughly 8–24 April and 5–20 May) the cabins are replaced by 4x4 buses from 1,920 m. It shuts entirely for wind, storms or volcanic activity, and a guide who cancels on you is doing the job properly. Carry cash for the 4x4 leg.
18 min by train or taxi · 11 km - 3:15 pm5Late lunch at Tenuta San MicheleSanta Venerina
Come off the mountain on the Taormina side instead of dropping back into Catania. Murgo's estate on the eastern slope makes a metodo classico out of nerello mascalese — a sparkling wine from a red grape grown on lava — and feeds you their own pork and vegetables for as long as you let them. Book; it is not a place you turn up at.
23 min by train or taxi · 23 km - 5 pm6Park at Lumbi and take the shuttle downTaormina
Do not drive into Taormina. The Lumbi multi-storey sits on the approach road, roughly €25 for the day, with a free shuttle that drops you at Porta Messina every fifteen minutes. The alternative is an hour spent reversing down a one-way street with a wall on both sides.
8 min walk · 650 m - 5:45 pm7Teatro Antico in the last hour of lightTaormina
Verified 2026-09-06: open daily 09:00–19:45 with last entry at 19:00, so this 17:45 arrival is comfortable and the theatre is yours for the last hour. On set dates in June, July, August and September 2026 the park also runs evening openings to midnight, last entry 23:00. Climb to the top of the cavea and sit on the left: from there Etna lines up exactly in the gap in the scaenae frons, which after a morning standing on it closes the day properly. Midday here is a furnace and a scrum; this hour is neither.
12 min walk · 950 m - 7:30 pm8Dinner at Osteria RossoDiVinoTaormina
Down a staircase off Vico De Spuches, a handful of tables, and the only room in orbit of the Corso Umberto that is neither a laminated tourist menu nor a hundred euros. Pasta alla Norma with proper salted ricotta, and Etna Rosso by the glass off the slope you were standing on this morning.
