The day, as they ran it
  1. 7 am1
Up the TF-21 through the cloud seaLa Orotava

Leave before seven and you climb out through the mar de nubes at sunrise, which is half the reason to do this from the north side. There is no fuel inside the park - fill up in La Orotava, not Vilaflor.

  2. 8:20 am2
Coffee at the Parador before anything opensLa Orotava

The only building for miles and the terrace looks straight across at the Roques de Garcia. It is also the last warm room before 3,555 m: it is often five degrees at the top station in October with wind on top of that.

8 min by train or taxi · 5.2 km
  3. 8:50 am3
Cable car up to La RambletaLa Orotava

Book the earliest slot at volcanoteide.com. The cable car stops running when wind at the top passes about sixty km/h, and afternoons are reliably windier than mornings - the first departure is the one that actually goes.

  4. 9:15 am4
Show the Telesforo Bravo permit at 3,555 mLa Orotava

The summit permit stopped being free in 2026: fifteen euros for non-residents, six for other Canary residents, free for Tenerife residents and under-14s, booked on the TenerifeON platform. New places are released every Monday at 07:00 Canary time, 56 days out, and they go in minutes. The permit covers a two-hour window and the ranger checks the passport against the name.

  5. 9:30 am5
Sendero Telesforo Bravo to the crater rimLa Orotava

Only 163 m of climb to 3,715 m, but at this altitude it still takes an hour. The sulphur vents at the rim are hot enough to burn a hand. Half the people up here get a headache: walk absurdly slowly, drink before you feel thirsty, and turn around if it gets worse rather than better.

  6. 11 am6
Cable car down before the queue buildsLa Orotava

The queue at the top station is worse than the one at the bottom and gets ugly after noon. If you would rather walk, hand back the return leg and take PNT-07 down to Montana Blanca - 1,200 m of loose pumice, about three hours, and it only works if you left a second car at the Montana Blanca gate on the TF-21.

  7. 12:15 pm7
Puchero at the Parador's Restaurante El RefugioLa Orotava

The only proper meal inside the park boundary. Ask for a terrace table facing the Roques and order the conejo en salmorejo or the puchero canario; the papas arrugadas come with both mojos.

21 min by train or taxi · 21 km
  8. 3 pm8
Bizcochon and coffee at Casa EgonLa Orotava

A 1916 pastry shop with a courtyard behind it. The drive down from 2,100 m to sea level takes 45 minutes and your ears will pop twice - this is the right place to stop while your head resettles.
