The Aquarium's first forty minutes, the Lone Cypress, and a long dinner in Carmel

- 9 am1Coffee, then park at the Aquarium end of Cannery RowMonterey
The Aquarium does not sell tickets at the door — they are online only, and the 10:00 slot is the one to hold. Park in a Cannery Row garage rather than circling: the street spots near the Aquarium are two-hour and this is a three-hour visit.
8 min by train or taxi · 1.6 km - 10 am2Monterey Bay Aquarium, at openingMonterey
$65, open 10:00-17:00 daily. The first forty minutes are the whole trick — go straight past the entrance exhibits to the Kelp Forest and the Open Sea while everybody else is still in the lobby, then work backwards. By 11:30 those two rooms are three deep. Spot-checked 2026-09-06: the Aquarium still states that tickets are sold only through montereybayaquarium.org and that it partners with no third-party reseller, so every 'discount Monterey Bay Aquarium ticket' site is either a markup or a fake. Its September calendar is also not uniform — 8-20 September is a Monterey County resident free-admission window, 12:00-16:00 by reservation — so check the hours-and-schedule page for your date rather than assuming 10:00-17:00.
10 min by train or taxi · 6.3 km - 1 pm3The 17-Mile Drive gatePebble Beach
$12.25 per vehicle, cash or card at the gate. Enter at Pacific Grove rather than Carmel and you drive the coast section with the ocean on your right and the pull-outs on your side of the road.
3 min walk · 0 m - 1:30 pm4Lunch at the Bench, inside the gatePebble Beach
This is the stop that pays for itself. The 17-Mile Drive gate is $12.25 a vehicle and the fee is refunded against a $35-or-more bill at any Pebble Beach Resorts restaurant — but NOT the market, so a sandwich at the deli does not count. Keep the gate receipt and hand it over with the bill.
3 min walk · 0 m - 2:45 pm5Bird Rock, the Lone Cypress, Ghost TreesPebble Beach
Three pull-outs are worth stopping at and the other fourteen are not. Bird Rock for the noise, the Lone Cypress because you came for it, and the bleached Ghost Trees at Pescadero Point, which nobody photographs and should.
8 min by train or taxi · 3.3 km - 4:15 pm6Carmel-by-the-Sea on footCarmel-by-the-Sea
The town has no street numbers, so every address is a corner and a courtyard — 'Dolores between 5th and 6th' is a real address, not somebody being vague. The galleries and passageways off Ocean Avenue are the point; the beach at the bottom of the hill is the sunset.
8 min by train or taxi · 1.8 km - 6 pm7Carmel Beach for sunsetCarmel-by-the-Sea
White sand, cypress, and dogs off-lead everywhere — this is one of the few California beaches where that is the rule rather than an infraction. Fires are allowed south of 10th Avenue only.
- 7:30 pm8Dinner at AubergineCarmel-by-the-Sea
The tasting menu, and the reason this day costs what it does. Book it a month out; it is a small room and there is one seating. The wine pairing is the honest half of the bill and worth taking.
