The day, as they ran it
  1. 9:15 am1
The R480 from Ballyvaughan over Corkscrew HillBallyvaughan

The whole trick of this day is direction. Every coach out of Galway does the Cliffs of Moher first, at eleven, and then the Burren; going the other way round means empty limestone all morning and empty cliffs all evening. Corkscrew Hill climbs out of Ballyvaughan in a set of hairpins built as famine relief work, and the pull-in at the top looks back over the whole bay. Fuel up before you leave the coast — there is nothing on the R480.

    Poulnabrone DolmenCarran

An OPW site with no gate, no ticket and no opening hours — you park across the road and walk out over the pavement. Roughly 5,800 years old, and the excavation found the remains of more than thirty people under it. The car park is small and the Galway coaches reach it around eleven, so this is a stop that is either sublime or a crowd depending entirely on whether you got here first. Walk out onto the clints and grikes away from the tomb: the flora in the cracks is the actual wonder of the Burren, Arctic and Mediterranean plants growing side by side, and it peaks in May and June.

    Caherconnell fort and the sheepdogsCarran

A ring fort a kilometre south of the dolmen, still being excavated, on the family's own land. The sheepdog demonstrations run at fixed times a few times a day and are the reason to come — build the late morning around the one you want rather than turning up and hoping. Fort and dogs are sold together or separately and the combined ticket is the better value. Seasonal: much reduced from November to March, so check before making it the anchor of a winter day. Verified 2026-09-06: the sheepdog demonstrations run daily at fixed times, and the times published are a late-morning slot (commonly 11:15) and an early-afternoon one (around 14:00–14:15). Confirm the day's times on the fort's own site before you fix this window — it is the demonstration that has to be caught, not the fort.

The Burren Perfumery tea room at CarranCarran

Free to walk into, at the end of a boreen you will be certain is the wrong turning — keep going. The tea room is garden vegetables, brown bread and cake, it is small, and it shuts earlier in the day than the perfumery does, so eat first and browse after. Cash is easier than card out here and the mobile signal is nil. Verified 2026-09-06: the perfumery is open seven days a week, 10:00–17:00, but the tea room runs only from St Patrick's Day to the end of October. From November to mid-March there is no lunch here at all — just a Winter Warming Room with complimentary coffee and biscuits — so a winter version of this day has to find its lunch elsewhere.

Through Lisdoonvarna to Doolin — not lunch at the Wild Honey InnLisdoonvarna

IMPOSSIBLE AS ORIGINALLY WRITTEN — verified 2026-09-06: the Wild Honey Inn serves DINNER ONLY, Wednesday to Saturday, and its season runs roughly March to September. There is no lunch service to book at 14:30 on any day of the week, so 'a late lunch at the Wild Honey' is a stop that cannot happen and a plan built on it strands you in Lisdoonvarna at half past two with nothing arranged. If you want it — and it is worth wanting, Ireland's only Michelin-starred pub, eaten in the bar — give it its own evening, book it, and check it is in season. What is left here is an easy hour rather than a meal: the Carran tea room was this day's lunch, Lisdoonvarna is a spa town that spends September being the matchmaking festival and is a completely different street the rest of the year, and the run out to Doolin puts you at the pier in good time for the boat. Eat something in Doolin before you sail if the tea room was not enough — you are not sitting down again until after the cliffs.

Under the cliffs from Doolin pierDoolin

An hour-long cruise that runs south under the cliff face and turns at Hag's Head. You do not understand that the cliffs are 214m high until you are at the bottom of them looking up, and the sea stack and the nesting ledges are invisible from the top. Sailings are cancelled outright in any real swell and the decision is made on the morning, which is why this is a hold and why the evening plan needs to survive without it. Take the seasickness advice seriously — the Atlantic here is rarely flat. Verified 2026-09-06: the Cliffs of Moher cruise out of Doolin sails seven days a week from March to October only, so this stop does not exist in a winter version of the day. The trip is 45 minutes to an hour depending on conditions, and the fare is refunded if the sailing is cancelled.

The Cliffs of Moher, evening slotLiscannor

Entry is pre-booked and timed, priced by slot, and walk-ups are not guaranteed a space — the late slots are both the cheapest and by a distance the best. Three reasons the evening wins: the cliffs face west, so at noon you are looking at a wall in its own shadow and after five they are lit end to end; the coach fleet has gone by about half five; and you are allowed to stay out on the cliff path after the visitor centre itself has shut. When you get up top, turn south towards Hag's Head rather than north to O'Brien's Tower, and within ten minutes you will have the cliff path more or less to yourself. Stay behind the wall — the grass edge is undercut and the wind here comes up the face. Verified 2026-09-06 against the official opening hours, which are seasonal and are what make or break this evening: May to August 08:00–21:00; March, April, September and October 08:00–19:00; November to February 09:00–17:00; closed 24–26 December. Last entry to the Visitor Experience and O'Brien's Tower is 20 minutes before closing, so an 18:30 arrival works from May to October and is flatly impossible from November to February — a winter version of this day has to put the cliffs in the early afternoon and find something else for the evening. You may stay on the paths after the centre closes; the car park exit barrier lifts automatically on the way out. Book online — the official site advertises savings of up to 70% against the gate, and walk-up spaces are not guaranteed.

    A session at Gus O'Connor'sDoolin

Doolin has three session pubs within four hundred metres — O'Connor's in Fisherstreet, McGann's and McDermott's up in Roadford — and the honest advice is to look in all three. If one is a coach-party crush the other two will not be. Sessions start when the players arrive, which is nearer 21:45 than the time chalked on the board, and the first half hour is the tuning. Do not talk over a slow air; nobody will tell you to stop and everybody will notice.
