The day, as they ran it
  1. 7:45 am1
    Reykjavík to ÞingvellirReykjavík

48 km, half an hour. Leaving at 07:45 rather than 09:00 is the entire difference between this day and the one everyone complains about: the coach wave hits Þingvellir at 10:00, Geysir at 11:30 and Gullfoss at 13:00, and if you stay an hour and a half ahead of it you never see it.

    Þingvellir: Almannagjá and ÖxarárfossÞingvellir

Parking is 1000 ISK, paid at the machine or online at parka.is within 24 hours — rangers do check plates, and the fine is not worth the saving. Walk down through the Almannagjá rift from the Hakið viewpoint (you are walking on the North American plate, with Eurasia across the valley) to Öxarárfoss and the Lögberg, where the Alþingi met from 930. Twenty minutes down, thirty back up.

Silfra: snorkelling the continental rift in a dry suitÞingvellir

About 21,000 ISK ($150) for a meet-on-site snorkel; more with Reykjavík pickup. The water is glacial meltwater filtered through lava for decades: 2°C year-round, and visibility past 100 m, which is why people fly here for it. You float, you do not swim, and the dry suit means only your lips and hands get cold. Requirements are real and enforced: over 16 (or 12 with a parent), able to swim, no diving in the 24 hours before, and you must declare height and weight in advance so the suit fits. Book two weeks out in summer. It runs year-round — winter is arguably better because the site is empty.

Lunch inside the tomato greenhouse at FriðheimarReykholt

You eat at a table among the vines, under grow lights, with bumblebees working overhead. Endless tomato soup with fresh-baked bread, plus a Bloody Mary made from the fruit two metres away — around 4,200 ISK. This has to be reserved, weeks ahead in summer: they seat a fixed number per hour and turning up hopeful gets you the gift shop and nothing else. Their horse show is a separate booking.

    Strokkur at GeysirGeysir

Geysir itself has been effectively dormant for years — the one that actually erupts is Strokkur, every 6 to 10 minutes, 20 to 30 m. Stand upwind: the spray is near-boiling and the wind here changes its mind constantly. Free to visit; the car park and its café are the only paid part. Forty minutes is plenty unless you want the walk up to the overlook.

  6. 3:35 pm6
    Gullfoss from the lower pathGullfoss

Free, and there are two viewpoints that are not the same experience. The upper deck by the café shows you the shape; the lower path takes you out onto the ledge beside the first drop where the ground shakes and the spray soaks you. That lower path is closed whenever it is iced — typically November to March — so in summer take it, in winter accept the upper one and stop fighting the wind.

Kerið crater on the way homeSelfoss

600 ISK, privately owned, cash or card at the hut. Red scoria rim around an opaque blue-green lake — a 20-minute walk around the top, or steps down to the water. It is a genuine idea rather than a fixture: if you are running late, drop it without regret, it is the smallest thing on this list.

Sky Lagoon, Sér pass, at last lightKópavogur

Not the Blue Lagoon and 10 minutes from downtown Reykjavík instead of 50. The Sér pass is about 13,990 ISK ($133) and buys a private changing room — worth it over the Saman's communal one. The seven-step ritual (hot water, cold plunge, sauna with a glass wall onto the Atlantic, cold mist, salt scrub, steam, back in) takes an hour if you are not rushed. Book a time slot; walk-ups get turned away on cruise days. Take the pool bar drink out to the infinity edge and watch the light go.
