The châteaux are 30 to 70 km apart with no useful train between them, and every coach tour arrives at Chenonceau and Chambord at the same two moments each day. A private driver-guide out of Tours or Amboise runs €550–650 for the car for the day; split three or four ways it is the cheapest way to be standing somewhere at 09:00. Book the day before, and give them the running order — most will default to the coach timings otherwise.
13 min by train or taxi · 13 km - 9:05 am2Chenonceau in the first hour it is openChenonceaux
Opens 09:00, 09:30 in winter, and the coaches land at 10:30 — so walk the plane-tree avenue quickly, do the gallery over the Cher while it is empty, and come back down through Diane de Poitiers' garden afterwards. Book online to skip the till. It is the one château here worth the crowd if you get the order wrong, but you will not need to. Verified 2026-09-06: Chenonceau is open every day of the year, opening at 09:00 from 4 April and 09:30 in the winter months, so the 09:05 start holds in season. NOT verified: the exact October opening and closing times, which the château moves in fortnightly steps — have the driver confirm the day's hours the evening before.
22 min by train or taxi · 22 km - 11:20 am3Vouvray, tasted in the tuffeauVouvray
Chenin blanc from vineyards worked biodynamically since 1990, tasted in a cellar cut into the same soft limestone the châteaux are built from. Appointments only and closed Sundays — ring two days ahead, not on the morning. Ask to taste the sec and the demi-sec side by side; the second is the one people write off and then buy.
22 min by train or taxi · 22 km - 12:45 pm4The long lunch the day is built aroundChenonceaux
One Michelin star, three hundred metres from the Chenonceau gate, and the set lunch is roughly a third of what the same kitchen charges at dinner. Book it when you book the driver — the day is arranged around this table, not the other way round, and it is why the afternoon starts at a civilised 14:50.
46 min by train or taxi · 46 km - 2:50 pm5Chambord for the roof, not for the roomsChambord
The interior is mostly empty and people trail through it dutifully for an hour. Go up the double-helix staircase immediately and spend your time on the roof terrace among the chimneys — that is the building. The park outside is free and full of deer; in October you can hear the stags roaring from the ramparts at dusk. Verified 2026-09-06: open 09:00–18:00 from 28 March to 25 October 2026 and 09:00–17:00 from 26 October, with last entry 30 minutes before closing — so a 14:50 arrival works on either side of that switch.
37 min by train or taxi · 81 km - 5:10 pm6Villandry's gardens in low sunVillandry
Take the gardens-only ticket: it is cheaper and the château interior is the least interesting thing on this whole route. Late afternoon is when the ornamental kitchen garden's colour comes up and the box hedges throw shadows. CORRECTED 2026-09-06: last admission is 30 minutes before closing, not the hour this note used to claim, and October closing is 18:00 up to the 24th and 17:00 from 25 to 31 October. The old 17:15–18:15 slot ran past closing on every October date, so the stop now ends at 17:55 — and from 25 October it is not possible at this hour at all: on those dates move Villandry to the morning and Chenonceau to the afternoon, or drop it. The gardens are open daily all year except 25 December; the château building itself is open 7 February–11 November 2026 and again from 28 November.
36 min by train or taxi · 36 km - 8 pm7Dinner under the château wall in AmboiseAmboise
A wine bar and bistro on the square below the château, still serving when most of Amboise has shut for the night. Work through the Loire list by the glass — Bourgueil, Montlouis, Chinon, Saumur-Champigny — because you have been driven all day and are not driving now.
