The day, as they ran it
  1. 7:45 am1
Coffee and a pastry standing at Dal MasVenice

Opens at 07:00 on the Lista di Spagna, which is otherwise the worst street in Venice. Croissant and a caffè at the bar, then twenty minutes on foot across to Fondamente Nove. Do not plan on eating anything on Torcello before noon — there are two places and they open when they open.

  2. 8:30 am2
Vaporetto 12 from Fondamente Nove to TorcelloVenice

The 08:30 leaves half empty and the day-tour boats do not reach Torcello until about 11:00 — that gap is the whole trick of this day. Buy the 24-hour ACTV travel card rather than singles: line 12 alone would eat three of them, and the card covers the way back and the late boats home. Check the departure board for which pontoon at Fondamente Nove; line 12 does not always use the same one.

  3. 10:30 am3
Santa Maria Assunta and the campanile, TorcelloVenice

CORRECTED 2026-09-06: this stop used to start at 09:30, which was impossible — the basilica complex opens at 10:30 from March to October and 10:00 from November to February, last entry 30 minutes before it shuts (18:00 summer, 17:00 winter). The 08:30 boat still earns its place: it lands you about 09:15 with the island to yourself, so walk out to the Ponte del Diavolo and Attila's throne while the doors are shut. Then climb the campanile first — the stairs are a ramp, the first hour after opening is still empty, and the whole northern lagoon reads as a map from the top. Inside, the Last Judgement mosaic is on the wall behind you as you come in, so you meet it on the way out, which is the right order. One combined ticket covers basilica, campanile and museum; no photography in the church.

Over the Mazzorbo bridge into BuranoVenice

Get off one stop early at Mazzorbo and walk the long wooden bridge instead of landing at Burano's front door. You pass the Venissa walled vineyard and arrive at the quiet end of the painted houses — the end without the lace shops and the photographers.

  5. 12:30 pm5
Lunch at Trattoria al Gatto NeroVenice

Book weeks ahead, and say on the phone if you want the risotto de gò: it is made from the lagoon goby, takes forty minutes, and is cooked for a minimum of two people. On the Fondamenta della Giudecca facing the canal. Closed Mondays. Verified 2026-09-06: closed Mondays, and lunch service does not start until 12:30 — the old 12:00 sitting in this slot did not exist, so the window now opens with the kitchen.

  6. 2:30 pm6
Vaporetto 12 back to Fondamente NoveVenice

Already on the travel card. The 14:30 is the last comfortable one — from 15:30 the returning tour groups fill it at Burano and you stand the whole way to Venice with a bag of lace between your feet.

  7. 4:15 pm7
The Ghetto Nuovo and the seven-storey housesVenice

Look up in the campo: these are the tallest buildings in Venice because after 1516 the Ghetto could only grow upwards. The five synagogues are reachable only on the museum's guided tour, in English roughly hourly, and they are the reason to come rather than the museum itself. Closed Saturdays and on Jewish holidays. Verified 2026-09-06: closed Saturdays, Jewish holidays, 25 December, 1 January and 1 May; open 10:00–19:00 from 1 June to 30 September and 10:00–17:30 from 1 October to 31 May. Synagogue tours run hourly from 10:30, and the last Friday tour is sometimes dropped for the Sabbath — in the October–May half take the 16:30 tour at the latest.

Cicchetti along the Fondamenta degli OrmesiniVenice

Start at Al Timon — the moored boat outside is the seating — then work up the fondamenta to Vino Vero. An ombra at each, everything eaten standing. Done properly this is dinner, and it is the last part of Venice still priced for the people who live in it.
