The day, as they ran it
  1. 8:15 am1
Columbia Road Flower Market, first lapLondon

Sunday only, roughly 08:00 to 15:00 — there is no market here on any other day of the week and the street is a row of shut shutters if you turn up on a Saturday. Be on it by 08:15: by 10:30 the road is a single shuffling file and you cannot turn round, let alone carry a tree. The buying rule is the reverse of the walking rule — do the first lap empty-handed, then come back at the end. After about 14:00 the traders would rather sell at a loss than load stock back onto the van, and the shouting starts. Nearest station is Hoxton on the Overground, not a tube; Bethnal Green and Old Street are both a ten-minute walk. Verified 2026-09-06: Sunday only, 08:00 to about 15:00 — the market's own site and Visit London give the same hours, and there is no market here on any other day of the week.

  2. 9:30 am2
Coffee and a slice in Ezra Street, behind the stallsLondon

The yard off the middle of Columbia Road is where locals stand while the tourists queue on the street. Lily Vanilli is Sunday-only too, and sells out of the good things before noon. E Pellicci on Bethnal Green Road is the famous caff round here and it is shut on Sundays — plan a different morning for it rather than walking over and finding out.

  3. 10:30 am3
Arnold Circus and the Boundary EstateLondon

Two minutes off Columbia Road and almost nobody makes the detour. The mound under the bandstand is the rubble of the slum that stood here, and the estate built on top of it in 1900 was the first council housing in the country. Free, takes twenty minutes, and it is the one thing on this day that explains the rest of it.

Brick Lane: the Truman yards and the Backyard MarketLondon

Sunday is the only day all of the Brick Lane markets run together. Backyard Market is the vintage one and the Sunday UpMarket is food and makers; both are in the Truman Brewery yards on the west side, signposted badly. Skip the northern end of Brick Lane where the curry-house touts work the pavement — the good end is south of the railway bridge. Old Spitalfields Market is 400m west if this is too much of a crush.

Salt beef beigel at Beigel BakeLondon

There are two beigel shops within thirty metres and people argue about them permanently: the white-fronted one at 159 is Beigel Bake and open 24 hours, the yellow one at 155 is the older Beigel Shop. Order salt beef with mustard and pickle, say yes to both, and eat it standing up — there is nowhere to sit and never has been. The queue moves faster than it looks because there is only one thing to order.

    Dennis Severs House, by candleLondon

Book the timed slot in advance — it is a private house with about a dozen people in it at a time and walk-up tickets are sold only if a slot happens to have room. Silence is genuinely enforced and so is the no-photographs rule; if that sounds like a gimmick, it is the entire point, and it stops working the moment somebody talks. Not for children, and not for anyone who wants a guide to explain things. Verified 2026-09-06: the house opens Friday 12:00–21:00 and Saturday and Sunday 12:00–16:00 — it is shut Monday to Thursday. Daytime silent visits run from 12:00 with the last around 15:15, so on the Sunday this day is built around, 14:00 is the last comfortable slot. The candlelit evening sittings at 18:00 and 20:00 are a Friday thing and are NOT available on a Sunday — if the Silent Night is what you came for, it is a separate evening at roughly four times the daytime price.

A pint at The Carpenters ArmsLondon

A back-street pub the Kray twins once bought for their mother, now simply a very good one — long beer list, no music loud enough to shout over. It is a five-minute walk north from Brick Lane up Cheshire Street, which on a Sunday is still half a market itself. If it is rammed, The Royal Oak on the corner of Columbia Road does the same job and puts you back where the day started.
