The day, as they ran it
  1. 5:15 am1
Pickup on Caracoles for the balloonSan Pedro de Atacama

They collect from accommodation inside the village only; if you are staying out on the Ayllu roads, arrange to wait in town. It is 4 °C at 05:15 and 25 °C by eleven — the layer you shed at nine is the one you want again at ten tonight.

  2. 5:45 am2
Sunrise balloon over the Cordillera de la SalSan Pedro de Atacama

Roughly CLP 280,000, an hour in the air, six to a basket and a minimum of four to fly. Book direct rather than through a reseller and book it for your FIRST possible morning, because wind cancels flights and the rebooking is onto the next clear day — if that is your departure day you simply lose it. Cancellation for weather is refunded in full. The pilot lands wherever the wind puts them and the chase truck brings sparkling wine; you are back in the village before the day tours have left.

  3. 9:30 am3
Breakfast at FranchuteriaSan Pedro de Atacama

A genuine French bakery in a mud-brick village at 2,400 m. Croissants gone by eleven. Drink more water than you want to — dehydration here reads exactly like altitude sickness and most people who feel awful on day one are simply dry.

8 min by train or taxi · 2.8 km
  4. 11 am4
Pukará de Quitor and a long siestaSan Pedro de Atacama

A 12th-century Atacameño fortress 3 km out of the village, entry collected by the Quitor community, walkable or a ten-minute bike. Climb to the cross for the whole oasis laid out along the river. Then do nothing until four: San Pedro between one and four in the afternoon is unusable, and every good thing here happens at either end of the day.

  5. 4 pm5
Valle de la Luna for sunsetSan Pedro de Atacama

Reserve entry is collected in cash pesos at the CONAF gate and independent entry now needs a booked time slot, which is the main argument for just taking the guided sunset trip — it includes the fee and gets you a spot at the Piedra del Coyote before the road fills. The Gran Duna is closed to climbing; the Tres Marías and the salt caverns are the walk. Everyone watches the sun set; TURN AROUND instead and watch the Licancabur go pink. Take a head torch, the walk back to the vans is after dark.

    3 min walk · 200 m
  6. 8:15 pm6
Dinner at BaltinacheSan Pedro de Atacama

A small tasting menu of Atacameño ingredients — quinoa, chañar, rica-rica, llama — in a courtyard, and the one place in the village worth booking. Ckelar and Adobe are the walk-in fallbacks on Caracoles. Eat early: you have a telescope at ten and the astronomy vans leave from the plaza.

    11 min walk · 850 m
  7. 10:15 pm7
Astronomy tour under a new moonSan Pedro de Atacama

A hold because it only runs on the nights either side of a new moon — check the lunar calendar BEFORE you fix your San Pedro dates, since a full moon washes out the entire reason people come here. Roughly CLP 45,000 for two hours with telescopes, a laser tour of the southern sky and hot chocolate; ask whether the guide is an astronomer or a driver. Free alternative: walk fifteen minutes out of the village down the Catarpe road and lie on your back. ALMA runs free Saturday and Sunday morning visits to the operations base, booked around 60 days ahead on their site.
