Napa done properly: Schramsberg caves, Frog's Leap, Stag's Leap — and somebody else driving

Eat something solid now. Three tastings is roughly fifteen pours, the first one is at 10:00, and lunch is not until 12:15 — the people who skip this are the people who are finished by the third appointment.
13 min by train or taxi · 13 km - 9 am2Car and driver for the dayNapa
This is not a luxury, it is the thing that makes the day possible. Three appointments are spread over 25 miles of Highway 29 and the Silverado Trail, and Napa County polices that exact road on that exact day extremely hard. A full-day private car runs $650-$1,500 per group — typically $85-$200 an hour with a five- or six-hour minimum, plus 18-20% gratuity — and the figure here is one seat of four in a $780 day including tip. Book two to three weeks ahead in harvest season. A driver also knows which tasting rooms will hold a case for you until the end of the day and which will not, which matters more than it sounds.
23 min by train or taxi · 23 km - 10 am3Schramsberg: two miles of 1870s cavesCalistoga
Appointment only, and it books weeks out — this is not a place you walk into, and neither are the other two. Start here because it is the northern end of the valley and because the tunnels sit at about 55F, which is the coldest thing you will do today: take a jacket in with you. Hand-dug by Chinese labourers in the 1870s and stacked floor to ceiling with riddled bottles. Sparkling first is also the right order for your palate. CORRECTED 2026-09-06 from Schramsberg's own visit pages: the public tour and tasting is $65 a head, not $75 (the Cave Tour with Classic Tasting is $100, the Reserve Wine & Cheese pairing $150). It runs seven days a week, appointment only as stated, the first tour of the day starts at 09:30 and the last at 14:30, and the appointment is one hour fifteen minutes — so this stop now ends at 11:15 rather than 11:30, which is what makes the corrected lunch and Frog's Leap slots below fit.
14 min by train or taxi · 8.5 km - 11:45 am4A real lunch at FarmsteadSt. Helena
Ninety minutes, sitting down, with actual food. This is the stop people cut to fit a fourth winery in and then regret at 16:00. Book it — the old nursery barn fills at weekends. Gott's Roadside is directly across Highway 29 and is the $20 version if you would rather put the money in the glass. MOVED 2026-09-06 from 12:15-13:45 to 11:45-13:15, because Frog's Leap's afternoon appointment is at 13:30 and the old lunch ran straight through it. Farmstead's own hours were NOT verified in this pass — confirm they seat at 11:45 when you book.
24h 1m by train or taxi · 3170 km - 1:30 pm5Frog's Leap, in the garden if they will have youRutherford
By reservation, in a red barn surrounded by an organic kitchen garden. Dry-farmed and certified organic since decades before either became a marketing line, and they will genuinely talk you through why the vines get no irrigation and what that does to the fruit. Deliberately the middle appointment — it is the most relaxed hour of the day and you want it between the caves and the cabernet. THREE CORRECTIONS, 2026-09-06, from Frog's Leap's own reservation and experience pages. The time: the Vineyard House Tour & Tasting runs at 10:30 and 13:30, so a 14:00 arrival matches nothing — moved to 13:30. The day: it runs Thursday through Monday, so this day cannot be a Tuesday or a Wednesday. And the advice to 'ask for the garden tasting' is wrong for an afternoon stop — the family-friendly Garden Tasting is a morning slot only (Friday from 10:00, Saturday and Sunday at 10:30), so if you want the garden you have to rebuild the day around it rather than request it at 13:30. Prices corrected too: the Vineyard House Back Porch Tasting is $60 a head plus a $5 Tock booking fee, and the 120-minute Rooted in Rutherford tour and tasting is $100 — the old $40-55 range is stale.
23h 56m by train or taxi · 3159 km - 3:30 pm6Stag's Leap Wine Cellars on the Silverado TrailNapa
Book an estate flight and taste the FAY and S.L.V. blocks side by side, which is the actual reason to come — this is the cabernet that won the 1976 Paris tasting. Last of the three on purpose: it is the biggest wine and the southern end of the valley, so the run back to town is fifteen minutes. Do not try to add a fourth. Three appointments plus a proper lunch is the honest ceiling for one day and everyone who has tried four has told the same story about it afterwards. CORRECTED 2026-09-06 — this was the stop that broke the day. Stag's Leap Wine Cellars is open 10:00-16:00 daily with the LAST TASTING APPOINTMENT AT 15:30, so the old 16:00 arrival was after the last slot of the day and would simply have been refused. Moved to the 15:30 appointment, which is the last one available, and everything upstream moved with it. Reservations are required for every experience — the Estate Experience wants 48 hours' notice and the Collector's Experience up to 72 — and all guests must be 21 or over. NOT verified: the $75-125 price range, which the winery's public pages did not state; treat the cost here as an estimate.
18 min by train or taxi · 11 km - 5:45 pm7Oxbow Public Market before it shutsNapa
Oysters at Hog Island, a Model Bakery English muffin to take back for the morning, and something salty to finish on after a day of tannin. Most stalls close at 19:00, so this only works if the last tasting ran to time.
