- 8:10 am 1The 8:10 from Rossio to SintraLisbon
CP suburban trains run about every 30 minutes and take about 40 minutes, no change. A return is about €4.60 (2026). Every guide says start early: be on a train by 8:30 at the latest. Weekdays Tuesday to Thursday are the calmest.
23 min by train or taxi · 23 km - 8:55 am 2Tuk-tuk or taxi up the hill to PenaSintra
The circular bus 434 (about €3) only starts around 9:30 and then runs every 20 to 30 minutes, so for the first palace slot take a tuk-tuk or taxi from outside the station. Guides say allow at least 30 minutes from the station to the palace gate, plus a 15-minute buffer. On a later slot, the 434 is fine.
18 min walk · 1.4 km - 9:30 am 3Pena Palace on the 9:30 timed slotSintra
The Romantic red-and-yellow palace on the crest. Palace and park €20 (2026). Parques de Sintra allows no late entry and no refunds for a missed slot, so book the first slot online days ahead (from April to October book at least three days out). Park opens 9:00, palace 9:30.
8 min walk · 550 m - 11:45 am 4Walk the Moorish Castle rampartsSintra
Ninth-century walls snaking over the granite ridge, with the best view of Pena itself. Its entrance is only about 200 m from Pena's ticket office, so walk. Adult €12, no timed slot, allow 60-90 minutes. Then take the Caminho de Santa Maria footpath down to town, about 25 minutes.
7 min walk · 500 m - 1:15 pm 5Lunch and travesseiros at PiriquitaSintra
Bakery since 1862 that made the travesseiro famous: flaky pastry rolled round almond-egg cream, about €1.60. Add a queijada and a savoury pastry for a light lunch. A short queue at lunchtime is normal. For a sit-down meal, guides suggest the small tascas away from Praça da República (€15-25).
7 min walk · 500 m - 2:30 pm 6Quinta da Regaleira and the Initiation WellSintra
A 10-minute walk from the centre. Adult €20 (2026), 30-minute slots from 10:00 to 17:00, entry allowed up to an hour after your slot. Visitors in 2026 waited 15-60 minutes at the well around midday, so this afternoon slot is the calmer one. Bring a phone torch for the wet tunnels, and download your ticket before you go, as signal at the gate is weak.
7 min walk · 550 m - 4:45 pm 7Sintra National Palace and its twin chimneysSintra
The medieval royal palace in the town square, known for its two conical kitchen chimneys and the Swan and Magpie rooms. No timed slot needed; guides suggest it as the easy town-centre add-on. About €13 (2025 price); last entry 18:00. Skip it if Regaleira ran long.
7 min walk · 500 m - 6 pm 8Train back to LisbonSintra
Back on your return ticket into Rossio, in the middle of the Baixa, by about 18:45.
