The day, as they ran it
  1. 9:30 am1
Daunt Books and Marylebone High StreetLondon

The Edwardian galleried room at the back is the reason to come, and it is shelved by country rather than by genre, so the novels, histories and guidebooks for one place stand together. Go before 10:30 and you get it nearly empty. If it is a Sunday, the Marylebone farmers market runs in the Cramer Street car park behind Waitrose — worth ten minutes.

  2. 10:45 am2
    The Wallace CollectionLondon

Free, open every day from 10:00, and ten minutes from Oxford Street with none of the crowd. The terms of the bequest forbid anything leaving or joining the collection, which means nothing here ever travels to a blockbuster show somewhere else — you see it in this house or not at all. Everyone stops at the Laughing Cavalier and the Fragonard and then leaves; the arms and armour in the basement is one of the best collections in Europe and is usually empty. Verified 2026-09-06: open seven days a week, 10:00–17:00, free, and no advance booking is needed for general admission; the only regular closures are 24–26 December.

  3. 12:45 pm3
    Lunch at The Golden HindLondon

A 1914 fish-and-chip room on a lane that kinks the way the old river did. Eat light — dinner tonight is four hours long. It is a short lunch service and it fills with local office workers from about 12:30, so go straight after the museum rather than wandering. Bring-your-own-wine at dinner only, no corkage nonsense at lunch.

  4. 2 pm4
    Across to Covent GardenLondon

Twenty-five minutes on foot down through Mayfair, or two stops on the Jubilee and Piccadilly with a change at Green Park — the walk is faster than it looks and far more pleasant. Tap in and out with the same card; there is no need for a paper ticket or an Oyster any more.

  5. 2:30 pm5
    West End matinee, stallsLondon

Matinees are Wednesday and Saturday almost everywhere, usually 14:00 or 14:30 — a Monday or Tuesday afternoon in the West End has nothing on at all, which catches people out. Book direct with the theatre rather than a reseller, and check the seating plan for the specific house: many of these are Victorian buildings where the front of the dress circle beats the back of the stalls for the same money. TKTS in Leicester Square sells genuine same-day discounts if you are willing to take what is left. Verified 2026-09-06: dinner tonight is Ikoyi, which opens Monday to Friday only — so of the two standard matinee days this has to be the Wednesday one. A Saturday matinee leaves you with the restaurant shut.

  6. 5:30 pm6
A drink in the American Bar at The SavoyLondon

No reservations, so the trick is to arrive before 18:00 — after that there is a queue in the lobby and it does not move. One cocktail costs what a bottle costs elsewhere and you are paying for the room and the piano, which is a fair trade once. Dress is smart; no sportswear, and they mean it. Beaufort Bar across the hall takes bookings if you would rather not gamble.

  7. 7 pm7
Ikoyi, tasting menu with the pairingLondon

Two stars, one menu, no choices, and it is West African larder cooking rather than anything you can predict from the address. Verified 2026-09-06: the dining room opens Monday to Friday only, and reservations are released on the 1st of each month at 12:00 UK time for dates up to two months ahead — set an alarm for that release rather than trying your luck, because the good times go in minutes. Parties of five or more go through reservations@ikoyilondon.com rather than the online form. The pairing roughly doubles the bill and is the part people regret skipping; a half-pairing is usually available if you ask when booking rather than at the table. Three and a half hours is the honest length, which is why the theatre is a matinee and not an evening show.

    4 min walk · 300 m
  8. 10:45 pm8
A room on Aldwych rather than a night busLondon

The single decision that makes the rest of the day work: after a pairing you are not driving, and the last trains out of the centre would have you leaving before the final course. Rates on a Tuesday or Wednesday are routinely a third below Friday and Saturday, so a mid-week matinee is cheaper twice over. Two minutes on foot from the restaurant and about six from the theatres.
